Groß-Ziethen is surrounded by an extensive landscape of forests and lakes and preserves traditions as a former stonemason and Huguenot village. For planning, you can choose from a range of focuses: exhibitions and geopark activities sit alongside viewpoints and outdoor routes. You can tailor your stay to whether you are mainly interested in the Ice Age and history, the landscape or activities along trails.
Lakes and scenic views
From the Drebitzberg viewing platform, you can see Lake Parstein, Lake Rosin and Lake Serwest; the Chorin terminal moraine arc is also visible in the distance. The view therefore brings several named lakes and a distinctive landform into one vista. If you want to explore the area from individual viewpoints, this offers a concrete counterpoint to the exhibitions and trails through the landscape.
The Ice Age and village history
The Ziethen Ice Age Museum is Brandenburg’s only Ice Age museum. Its exhibition topics include fossils, rock samples and traces of mammoths. The objects give the visit a geological focus, while Groß-Ziethen’s preserved traditions as a former stonemason and Huguenot village offer a different historical perspective.
The geopark center presents the exhibitions “Experiencing the Ice Age” and “UNESCO World Heritage Beech Forest Grumsin.” The geopark offers guided geology and archaeology tours in the field, as well as tours of the permanent “Experiencing the Ice Age” exhibition. If you are planning such a tour, check the relevant dates and offers before travelling. Guided hikes are also available in the UNESCO World Heritage Beech Forest Grumsin.
Routes and places to explore
In the Sperlingsherberge and Ihlowberge area, a glacial erratic sundial is one of the places to explore. The green Beech Leaf Route passes life-size mammoth Georg on the museum grounds and the protected stonemason’s quarry near Sperlingsherberge. It therefore offers different points of interest: a distinctive connection to the Ice Age and one to the former stonemasonry trade.
The surface is also relevant when finding your way along the route to Sperlingsherberge: the route runs mainly on natural-surface field paths and begins on a paved road. The Panorama Trail is a separate route, offering a way to explore the landscape in Ziethen’s Klein Ziethen district by bicycle. These descriptions refer to different options; they do not provide a combined route or walking time.
Getting there and the wider regional setting
The geopark hiking trail starting point in Groß-Ziethen is accessible from Joachimsthal by bus 920; Joachimsthal has rail connections. Check connections before travelling so you can plan the train and bus legs accordingly.
The broader travel destination of Barnim has other distinct highlights. Chorin Monastery is a key work of North German Brick Gothic architecture; the Niederfinow Boat Lift is Germany’s oldest working boat lift. The Finow Canal is considered Germany’s oldest artificial waterway still navigable by boat. Canoe trips are possible on the canal, while sightseeing boat trips are offered on Lake Werbellin. These examples offer a glimpse of Barnim’s diversity without replacing Ziethen’s distinctive themes.
