The Karow Ponds are near Karow, making nature observation a tangible part of a stay. In Karow, the historic village street of Alt-Karow offers a different focus: the church, farmhouses and protected farmsteads tell the story of the village. This gives you two distinct priorities to consider when planning your trip, complemented by routes for both short walks and longer hiking and cycling excursions.
Nature at the Karow Ponds
The Karow Ponds Nature Reserve comprises four former peat-extraction and fish ponds. From four viewpoints, you can look across the reed beds to the water. The area is an important resting and breeding ground for waterbirds and reed-dwelling birds. If you would like to include birdwatching in a walk, you can use the circular trails. The viewpoints and trails offer different ways to experience the landscape and its birdlife. Check local conditions before your visit.
On the circular trails, you can observe, among other wildlife, grass snakes and sand lizards. In summer, you can also spot more than 20 species of dragonfly. The season is therefore an important consideration if dragonflies are of particular interest to you. Wildlife sightings vary by season and are not guaranteed, so plan for possible sightings rather than a definite list of species. This way, a nature walk remains a worthwhile part of your stay even if you do not see particular animals.
On foot and along longer routes
As a rough guide, it takes a little over 20 minutes to walk from Karow S-Bahn station to the ponds. Another entrance to the nature reserve is on Bucher StraĂźe. If you would like to combine your nature walk with arriving by S-Bahn, the walking time provides a helpful estimate; the additional entrance offers another named access point.
The Panke Hiking Trail and Barnim Villages Trail intersect at the Karow Ponds. Both trails allow for longer hikes and cycling excursions, while shorter walks are also possible. This lets you choose between a manageable stroll and a longer outing on foot or by bike, without assuming that both options cover the same distance. Check the signs before setting out, as routes may change.
Alt-Karow and its village history
The historic village street of Alt-Karow offers a historical counterpoint to the trails and nature observation at the ponds. The streetscape is shaped by a village church dating from the 13th century and farmhouses from the 19th century. The village ensemble and individual three-sided farmsteads are protected historic monuments. If you are interested in architecture and local history, you can focus on a different subject here than on a walk through the nature reserve.
When choosing where to stay, you can therefore distinguish between two clear interests: the Karow Ponds are associated with birdwatching, reeds and outdoor trails; Alt-Karow with historic village architecture. You can also plan your time around these interests: short walks and longer hiking or cycling excursions are different options, while the village street provides its own focus on local history. The combination that suits you depends on which of these subjects you would like to give more time to on your trip.
