Bad Weißenstadt combines a distinctive landscape with protected historic buildings and a historic spa park. For your travel plans, the lake, old town and park offer different highlights: you can choose how much to focus on nature, local history and outdoor activities according to your interests.

Old Town, Rows of Barns and Rock Cellars

On the edge of Weißenstadt’s old town, historic rows of barns are protected as heritage sites; at the same time, they continue to shape the townscape. The protected historic ensemble in the old town centre covers the area of Gartenstraße – Am Stadtgraben – An der Stadtmauer. Here you can encounter two distinct aspects of the town’s architectural heritage: the rows of barns at the edge of the old town and its protected centre.

A guided tour lasting just over an hour passes through the narrow lanes and historic squares of Bad Weißenstadt. Along the way, you’ll learn about the town’s distinctive features. The rock cellars are another local point of interest: about 200 still remain within the town. The guided tour and the rock cellars offer different ways to explore the historic townscape.

Weißenstädter See and Spa Park

At around 50 hectares, Weißenstädter See is the largest lake in the heart of the Fichtelgebirge. In the historic spa park, you’ll find fitness equipment, reclining loungers and a Kneipp water-treading pool. The park offers both opportunities to exercise and places to take a break, so you can choose how you’d like to spend your time there.

Twelve information boards from the Bavaria-Bohemia Geopark present different aspects of granite, from its formation to the finishing of its surfaces. The spa park is freely accessible all year round. The boards add a geological focus to the park facilities, tracing the stone from its origins to the treatment of its surfaces.

Cycle Routes and Exploring Locally

A consistently signposted network of cycle routes connects Bad Weißenstadt with the surrounding neighbouring towns. As route markings can change, it’s worth checking local route information when planning a specific ride. A guided town tour lasting just over an hour and exploring by bike are two different ways to set aside time for discovery.

The Bavarian section of the Eger Cycle Route also runs through the wider travel destination of Wunsiedel Im Fichtelgebirge. It is around 55 kilometres long and follows the Eger River through Bad Weißenstadt, Röslau, Marktleuthen, Thierstein, Selb, Hohenberg a.d.E. and Schirnding. On the Czech side, the route continues via Pomezí nad Ohří and Cheb, where it connects to Czech long-distance cycle route No. 6 / Cyklostezka Ohře. When planning this regional route, local information about possible closures or diversions may be helpful.

Mining, geology and granite are also among the topics covered across the wider region. The “Kleiner Johannes” Old Mine in Arzberg focuses on mining and geology; its seasonal opening dates may change. At the Häuselloh Show Quarry in Selb, the focus is on extracting and processing granite. Guided tours there are available on request. If you’re including these places in your plans, check the mine’s seasonal opening dates and enquire about tours at Häuselloh.

In Weißenstadt, the “ROGG IN” Information Centre covers the cultivation and processing of rye and its importance. It is currently closed. This sets it apart from the freely accessible areas of the spa park: the park is open to visitors free of charge all year round, while the information centre is currently closed.
