In Bad Alexandersbad, the history of a spa town meets practical starting points for a stay. The Luisenquelle spring was discovered in 1734 by Wolfgang Brodmerkel, a farmer from Sichersreuth, and has shaped the town’s history as a spa resort. Its healing water has long been used there as a source of vitality. At ALEXBAD, guests can drink water from the spring and experience it on their skin during treatments. ALEXBAD also offers a panoramic pool, a sauna, a training park, physiotherapy, massages and beauty treatments.

Healing Waters and Spa History in the Town

A monopteros stands by the Luisenquelle spring. A monopteros is a circular structure with a roof supported by columns; this architectural form gives the site a distinctive touch. Bad Alexandersbad’s historic spa park is also one of the facilities associated with relaxation: it includes a natural Kneipp pool. Check its current condition locally before visiting.

The modern Palace Terraces and the Margrave’s Palace together form an architectural focal point and invite visitors to linger. They are also a starting point for a hike: Circular Trail 1, “At the Foot of the Luisenburg,” begins here and is about 5 km long. Nearby, an avenue leads directly from the Old Spa House to the Luisenburg, with its rock labyrinth and open-air stage. This means different options can be considered when planning a visit: a short hiking trail, architecture in the town and places of interest nearby.

Forest Pool and Kleinwendern Ark Village

The Bad Alexandersbad Forest Pool lies in the north-west of the municipality, on the edge of a small wood, and covers about 1.5 hectares. Its history as a place for the local population to relax and unwind goes back more than 100 years. Its location and size give the forest pool a different character from the facilities around the Luisenquelle spring: here, the edge of the woods defines the setting.

Kleinwendern Ark Village was named Bavaria’s first Ark Village in 2019. A municipal announcement dated 30 September 2025 lists more than 200 endangered livestock breeds there, including Coburger Fuchs sheep and Bavarian Land Geese; the number may change over time. For school classes and groups, the announcement mentions farm tours and the educational farm, where visitors can learn about everyday life in the Ark Village. Check which tours are actually available before travelling.

More to Explore in the Wider Wunsiedel Im Fichtelgebirge Destination

The Eger Cycle Route is another option for route planning in the wider Wunsiedel Im Fichtelgebirge destination. Its Bavarian section is around 55 kilometres long and follows the Eger through Bad Weißenstadt, Röslau, Marktleuthen, Thierstein, Selb, Hohenberg a.d.E. and Schirnding. On the Czech side, the route continues via Pomezí nad Ohří and Cheb, where it connects with the Czech long-distance cycle route No. 6 / Cyklostezka Ohře. Check for information about temporary closures or diversions when planning your trip.

Other places of interest in the wider destination are in Arzberg and Selb: the “Kleiner Johannes” Old Mine in Arzberg focuses on mining and geology. Its seasonal opening hours may change, so check them in advance. The Häuselloh Show Quarry in Selb covers the extraction and processing of granite. Tours are available on request; seasonal opening times and tour arrangements may change, so check both directly with the operator.
