Schirnding combines a cross-border cycling route with the history of the border region: the Bayern-Böhmen Bridge Cycle Route crosses the border here, while the Bavarian Border Museum Schirnding explores everyday life at the border. The Eger Cycle Route and the village market in August are also useful points of reference when planning a trip.

Cycle Routes with Different Paths

The Bayern-Böhmen Bridge Cycle Route runs from Fichtelberg via Tröstau, Wunsiedel, Thiersheim and Selb. At Schirnding, the route crosses the border and continues to the Czech city of Aš. This makes it easy to follow the route using specific stops: Schirnding is the named border crossing, and Aš is the destination on the Czech side.

In the wider destination of Wunsiedel in the Fichtelgebirge, the Bavarian section of the Eger Cycle Route runs for around 55 kilometres along the Eger River. It passes through Bad Weißenstadt, Röslau, Marktleuthen, Thierstein, Selb, Hohenberg a.d.E. and Schirnding. On the Czech side, it continues via Pomezí nad Ohří and Cheb; in Cheb, the route connects to Czech long-distance cycle route No. 6, the Cyklostezka Ohře.

A separate section of the route is in the Fischern area near Schirnding: there, a 529-metre-long asphalt section of the Eger Cycle Route was opened to public cycling. If you are planning a ride, it is advisable to check for current information about possible closures or diversions.

Border Museum and the History of the Pass

The exhibition at the Bavarian Border Museum Schirnding presents the history of the Federal Border Guard. Original equipment and historical uniforms offer a glimpse into everyday life at the border. The museum opened in its new premises at HauptstraĂźe 15 on 5 August 2023. Check current visiting arrangements before visiting the museum.

The customs history of the Schirnding Pass also provides a specific historical timeline: customs collectors had been working there since the 18th century. In 1833, the customs office was elevated to the rank of a main customs office. This development adds a historical perspective on administration at the pass to the story of the border.

Village Market in August

The Schirnding village market takes place on the last Saturday in August and welcomes visitors from near and far. If you would like to plan your trip around the market, check the date of the specific edition.

On 29 August 2026, the market offered attractions and stalls selling regional products, arts and crafts, and treats throughout the town centre. This information refers to that edition; it does not describe what future markets will offer.
