In Pleinfeld, discoveries range from a protected landscape feature to trails along Großer Brombachsee and traces of local and Roman history. To plan your visit, it helps to choose a focus first: time in nature, a hike or bike ride, a visit to the water, or a look into the past.

Landscape near Mischelbach

The alder woodland and wet meadow near Mischelbach have been a protected landscape feature since 1992. The area covers about 10.34 hectares and lies in Mischelbach, a district of Pleinfeld, on the Igelseebach, in the border area between the Franconian Lake District and Altmühltal Nature Park. The woodland, wet meadow and stream give this protected area its distinctive character. It is a natural attraction in its own right within the wider landscape around Pleinfeld.

Hiking and cycling

Hiking Trail Pleinfeld No. 82 starts at the forest car park on the edge of town, near the sports park. It runs via Mandlesmühle to Allmannsdorf and returns to Pleinfeld across the main dam of Brombachsee. Along the way, there are views across the lake and into the Brombachtal valley. Near Mandlesmühle, the route also passes the Franconian Lake District Information Centre. Check local conditions before setting out.

Another option for longer hikes is the “Der Seenländer” circular trail, which starts in Pleinfeld. This offers two distinct approaches: a specifically described route that returns to Pleinfeld, and longer excursions on the Seenländer. The area around Pleinfeld also has mostly flat, well-maintained and consistently marked cycle paths. They run from lake to lake or around the lakes, almost entirely away from road traffic. The cycle network is particularly suitable for families with children.

At Großer Brombachsee

The Pleinfeld recreational area lies on the southeast shore of Großer Brombachsee and includes a bathing beach. Seasonal conditions may affect its use, so factor them into your plans. The lake can be a focus in its own right, alongside hiking and cycling, without having to fit every activity into a single outing.

Local history and Roman traces

The Local History and Brewery Museum preserves evidence of Pleinfeld’s history since the Middle Ages. The attic houses a brewery section devoted to beer production, from hops to wooden casks and swing-top bottles. The small fort near Gündersbach also offers an insight into the region’s history. It belongs to a series of structures measuring about 20 × 20 metres, built immediately behind the Limes line as part of the Roman frontier defences. A display garden at Mandlesmühle commemorates the village culture that disappeared beneath the lakes.

Roman heritage in Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen district

Across the wider destination of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen, the Limes runs for around 40 kilometres through the district; it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site there since 2005. The Roman Museum in Weißenburg displays Germany’s largest Roman treasure find and houses the Central Bavarian Limes Information Centre. This district-wide context adds further themes to Pleinfeld’s local Roman traces without conflating them with the sights in Weißenburg.
