Burgsalach lies between the Franconian Lake District and Altmühltal Nature Park, on the plateau of the Weißenburg Jura and directly on the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Upper German-Raetian Limes. Local highlights include the Roman Experience Trail, with two routes of different lengths, trails associated with the Limes and seasonal cross-country ski trails. To plan your visit, you can first consider the walking time or—in winter—the local conditions.

Roman Experience Trail: Two Walking Times

The Burgsalach Roman Experience Trail offers a short route of 5.8 kilometres, taking about 2.5 hours to walk, and a long route of 12.7 kilometres, taking about four hours. This lets you compare the route length with the stated time required and plan your hike accordingly. The trail starts next to the Burgsalach sports ground, where ample parking is available.

Limes Trails and a Burgus Nearby

The Limes Hiking Trail and the German Limes Cycle Route lead to Burgsalach. The town is therefore a destination for both hiking and cycling trips associated with the Limes. Nearby is the Burgus at Burgsalach, a square Roman structure with sides measuring around 32.6 metres. According to the latest findings, it is probably considered a Roman mansio, or Roman inn.

Cross-Country Skiing When Winter Conditions Are Suitable

The four trails at Burgsalach’s cross-country ski area can be combined into routes between 7 and 17 kilometres long. Trail 4 is 17 kilometres long and marked blue; markings and conditions are seasonal. Use is free of charge. The Weißenburg section of the German Alpine Club grooms and maintains the trails on a voluntary basis. Whether they can be open and groomed depends on snow conditions and local volunteer activity. Check current snow and trail conditions before your day of cross-country skiing.

The Wider Region: Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen

In the wider destination of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen, the Limes can be seen on a larger scale: it runs for around 40 kilometres across the district and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site there since 2005. Numerous Roman watchtowers, forts and fragments of bathhouses bear witness to the region’s Roman history. In Weißenburg, the Roman Museum displays Germany’s largest Roman treasure find and houses the Central Bavarian Limes Information Centre. Weißenburg’s Roman heritage also includes the partially reconstructed Biriciana fort and the Roman Baths.

Several longer routes are also part of the wider destination of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen. The Weißenburg Via Biriciana hiking trail follows old Roman roads to the Limes. The Altmühltal Panorama Trail runs for over 200 kilometres along the Altmühl from Gunzenhausen to Kelheim through Altmühltal Nature Park. It is certified by the German Hiking Association as a “Quality Trail Wanderbares Deutschland”; if this certification is important to your plans, check its current status. The Altmühltal Cycle Route runs for around 160 kilometres from Gunzenhausen to Kelheim. The Altmühl canoe route stretches for just under 120 kilometres from Gunzenhausen to Dietfurt/Töging; navigation conditions may vary seasonally.

Altmühlsee lies northwest of Gunzenhausen and is ideal for swimming, sailing and surfing. Conditions and local restrictions may vary. The roughly 120-hectare Vogelinsel (Bird Island) in Altmühlsee offers birdwatching tours led by the Bavarian Association for the Protection of Birds. If a tour is important to your plans, check its availability in advance.
