Iffeldorf offers two distinct ways to plan a trip: hiking through the Osterseen Lakes and exploring local history around the parish church of St. Vitus and the Heuwinkl Chapel. The railway connection is also relevant when planning your visit. You can decide whether you would like to focus on the trails, the history of the churches and pilgrimage, or a specific event date during your stay.

Hiking around the Osterseen Lakes

The Natura 2000 route through the Osterseen Lakes is 10 kilometres long and takes about three hours. It starts either at the Osterseen car park on Jägergasse or at Iffeldorf railway station. Another option is the blue-marked Route 25, which circles Ostersee and also starts in Iffeldorf. When choosing a hike, you can therefore compare a route with a published length and duration with a marked circular trail.

The “Hike around the Osterseen Lakes” is a gentle nature experience through Iffeldorf. The long-distance “Heilige Landschaft Pfaffenwinkel” trail also passes through the village. For your journey, it is also useful to know that Iffeldorf is connected to the Munich–Tutzing–Kochel railway line. The railway station is also one of the stated starting points for the Natura 2000 route. If you are planning to travel by train for your hike, check the current timetable before you leave.

St. Vitus, the Heuwinkl Chapel and the candlelight procession

The parish church of St. Vitus received its Rococo interior furnishings in the mid-18th century. The frescoes were painted by Johann Jakob Zeiller from Tyrol, who lived from 1708 to 1783. The furnishings and artistic attribution provide two distinct historical reference points: the period when the Rococo furnishings were created and the painter’s dates of life.

The Heuwinkl Chapel, a Marian pilgrimage site, is located on the eastern edge of the village. Every year on the second Sunday in September, a candlelight procession goes from the parish church to the chapel, accompanied by the Iffeldorf music band. If you would like to include the procession in your stay, this recurring date provides a specific point of reference for planning.

Another visitor attraction in Iffeldorf is Gut Aiderbichl. Visitors can see the stables and enclosures, as well as exhibitions and video presentations. These visits are another activity to choose from, alongside the hiking trails and church history sites.

Weilheim-Schongau as a wider region

The Pfaffenwinkel travel region is part of the wider destination of Weilheim-Schongau. The district is bordered by the Lech to the west, the Ammer flows through its central area, and the Loisach runs along its eastern border. Other cultural and hiking themes can be explored separately within this regional context.

The Wieskirche near Steingaden has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. Dominikus Zimmermann built it between 1745 and 1754. Reasons to visit include church services, summer concerts and quiet contemplation; dates may vary. If you are planning to attend these events, check the current schedule.

In Penzberg, the Mining Museum preserves the memory of the local lignite mining industry, which operated from 1796 to 1966. The museum offers multilingual guided tours for international visitors, families and school groups. Another way to explore the region on foot is the approximately five-kilometre Erdfunkstelle hiking trail in Raisting. It starts at Raisting railway station and forms a circular route through the satellite earth station, passing the large satellite dishes and the industrial monument Radom with its historic Antenna 1. Trail conditions may vary.
