Pullenreuth lies on the sunny side of Steinwald Nature Park and on the southern slopes of the Fichtelgebirge. At the Glasschleif, along the Schleiferer Trail and in the church, you can encounter themes ranging from crafts and natural history to late Gothic church art. These different highlights give you a concrete framework for planning your trip.

Glass, Forest History and Geology

The “Glasschleif” information centre in Pullenreuth is dedicated to glass grinding and polishing, the history of the forest and the geology of the Steinwald. The Schleiferer Trail covers the same three themes. It starts at the Glasschleif and passes ten information boards. This lets you explore the centre’s topics in the context of a walk: glassworking is presented alongside insights into forest history and geology rather than as a subject in its own right.

The Schleiferer Trail also brings history to life at specific sites. The Schützweiher, a pond created by hand, contains bog water from the Steinwald that was used to operate waterwheels. The Wetzsteinbruch quarry was used to extract whetstones. The two stops point to different uses: waterwheels at the pond and the extraction of grinding stones at the quarry. This adds historical connections to water and work to the trail’s themes.

Church History and Hiking Trails

The church in Pullenreuth also offers a tangible point of reference to the past. Its oldest surviving furnishing is a late Gothic statue of the Virgin Mary dating from around 1505. The year 1505 is also thought to be the date when the medieval church was rebuilt. The statue is therefore dated to this period, while the rebuilding remains a matter of conjecture.

For planning your route, a 6.2 km hiking trail is also available. It starts at the church in Pullenreuth and runs via the Glasschleif to the Waldhaus. The Schleiferer Trail has a different focus: its ten boards cover glassworking, forest history and geology. The hiking trail’s length can help you plan your outing; on the Schleiferer Trail, the themed stops shape what you can explore.

There is a car park very close to the Glasschleif. Check the current parking options before you travel. This will help you orient yourself on arrival based on your chosen starting point, without conflating the two different trail options.

Culture and Food and Drink in the Wider Destination of Tirschenreuth

In the wider destination of Tirschenreuth, the MuseumsQuartier offers a cultural highlight of its own. It combines the Upper Palatinate Fisheries Museum with six other specialised exhibitions in a former monastery. There, you can explore almost 1,000 years of fishing and fish-farming history and see native fish in four large aquariums. Special exhibitions, talks, readings and concerts are held regularly; check the current event dates when planning your visit.

At the Fischhofpark in Tirschenreuth, the historic Fischhofbrücke bridge and the Fischhof, which houses the district court, are located in the centre. As for food and drink, the district of Tirschenreuth is best known for Zoigl, the traditional beer of the Upper Palatinate Forest. Carp from the pond landscapes of the “Land of 1,000 Ponds” are another defining feature. These regional themes complement Pullenreuth’s highlights with distinctive experiences from Tirschenreuth.
