Between Steinwald Nature Park and the Waldnaab Valley lies Krummennaab—a place where swimming in a natural lake, a circular trail and traces of cultural history each offer something different. When planning your trip, it is worth first choosing what you would like to do each day: Erlenweiher offers swimming, while Bürgerpark and the cycle paths provide other ways to spend time outdoors. Churches and castle ruins add a tangible local history dimension to these nature-based attractions.

At Erlenweiher: Swimming and practical planning

Erlenweiher bathing lake covers almost 1.8 hectares and offers swimming in a natural lake. It has a designated non-swimmer area and several play structures for children. So if you are planning a stay by the water, you will find swimming, a separate area for non-swimmers and play facilities here. Swimming conditions can vary, so check for updates before your visit. Strandcafé Treibholz is next to the bathing area and serves drinks and snacks. As its opening hours and offerings may change, check in advance whether the café is open.

Outdoors: BĂĽrgerpark and trails

Bürgerpark is located on the grounds of a former porcelain factory along the Fichtelnaab Cycle Route. The park has loungers and Smartflower solar flowers that generate electricity. This place brings together the site’s former use, opportunities to relax and electricity generation. For cyclists, a cycle path towards Windischeschenbach also starts in Krummennaab, at the junction with the Fichtelnaab Cycle Route. Check local route conditions before setting out.

If you would like to include a circular route in your plans, you can choose the signposted Bankerlrunde. It is over 10 km long and passes through the landscape of the southern Steinwald Nature Park within the municipality of Krummennaab. The route passes through Stockau on its way to Krummennaab; you can also start in the centres of Krummennaab or Thumsenreuth. This gives you two route-planning options: a signposted circular trail with a stated length and a cycle path with a stated direction. The two routes offer different ways to experience the landscape.

Churches and Trautenberg Castle

The shared churches connect the history of Krummennaab and Thumsenreuth with their joint use by the two main Christian denominations. St. Leonhard in Krummennaab was a shared church from 1663 to 1930; St. Ägidius in Thumsenreuth was one from 1663 to 1935. During this period, both denominations used the churches jointly and alternately. The different end dates apply to their respective churches.

Another historical feature is Trautenberg Castle, a ruin northeast of Krummennaab. Mounds of rubble, the neck ditch and part of the shield wall are still visible from the buildings that once stood there. While the churches are notable for their joint use by different denominations, Trautenberg is notable for the surviving traces of the former castle complex.

Cultural experiences in the wider destination of Tirschenreuth

In the wider destination of Tirschenreuth, the MuseumsQuartier in Tirschenreuth brings together the Upper Palatinate Fishing Museum and six other specialist exhibitions in a former monastery. Visitors can explore almost 1,000 years of fishing and fish-farming history and see local fish in four large aquariums. The MuseumsQuartier regularly hosts special exhibitions, talks, readings and concerts. Dates may change, so check the current programme before visiting.

Culinary attractions are also associated with Tirschenreuth district: the district is known for Zoigl, the Upper Palatinate Forest’s traditional beer, and for carp from the pond landscapes of the “Land of 1,000 Ponds.” This regional perspective on fishing and food complements Krummennaab’s nature and history without suggesting that these attractions are located in Tirschenreuth.
