Salching can be explored through three specific themes: exercise at the sports facility, architectural history at the branch church of St. Peter, and archaeology. For regional planning, the broader destination of Straubing-Bogen is also relevant; there you will find further, independent attractions.

Exercise in Salching and the surrounding area

In addition to the SV-Salching sports facility, the municipality of Salching has a public exercise trail. It is designed for all age groups and is easily accessible. Its equipment includes a balance trainer, full-body trainer, balance course, back trainer, horizontal bars and slackline. The trail thus offers several different elements for exercise and balance.

Nearby is the Aitrachaue between Geltolfing and Salching, where you can take a walk through the floodplain. Unlike the trail equipped with exercise stations, the focus here is on walking through the landscape. The two options therefore differ in form: exercises at fixed stations or a route through the floodplain.

Church and archaeology

The branch church of St. Peter at BrĂĽckenstraĂźe 37 is a small late Romanesque building. It was expanded in the Baroque style and altered around 1900; its tower dates from the 18th century. The church also has furnishings. The building thus reveals several distinct periods.

The focal point of the archaeology room in Salching is a centrally placed lectern display case containing the partial skeleton from a richly furnished Early Bronze Age burial. The room was intended primarily to display finds recovered at Salchinger Pfingstberg between 2012 and 2014. The church represents architectural history; the finds from Pfingstberg were intended to be displayed in the archaeology room.

Other destinations in the broader destination of Straubing-Bogen

The following regional examples are part of the broader destination of Straubing-Bogen and are located in other named places, not in Salching. In Wiesenfelden, two routes can be compared by length and facilities: the Kobelberg Nature Trail is about 4.5 km long, has nine stations, is suitable for strollers and is also cleared in winter. The accessible circular route around Beckenweiher is 2.3 km long and suitable for strollers and wheelchairs.

At Beckenweiher, five information points with benches and information boards complement the circular route. They cover the animal and plant life, the protection status and the history of the pond. There is also a 110 m-long nature observation boardwalk. The longer Kobelberg route, with its nine stations, and the shorter, accessible Beckenweiher circular route, with its information points and boardwalk, therefore offer different types of walks.

Culture also has its own focus in the broader destination of Straubing-Bogen: Bogenberg is one of Bavaria’s oldest Marian pilgrimage sites that is still active today. The annual Holzkirchen Candle Pilgrimage takes place at the pilgrimage church there at Pentecost. The Bogenberg District Museum covers the history of the Bavarian lozenges—from the Counts of Windberg-Bogen, through their use by the Wittelsbachs and in the Bavarian state coat of arms, to their status as a symbol of Bavaria. Groups of ten or more and school classes can book individually designed guided tours of Bogenberg by telephone or in writing in advance, including outside opening hours.

In Maibrunn near Sankt Englmar, the WaldWipfelWeg offers an accessible walking route above the treetops, reaching heights of up to 30 metres. The Nature Adventure Trail features interactive stations, climbing opportunities, and alpacas, llamas, sheep and kangaroos. The WaldWipfelWeg is also home to the unique “Upside-Down House,” the only one of its kind in Bavaria: it stands entirely on its roof, and everything inside is turned upside down. Express bus route 58 runs hourly to the WaldWipfelWeg from Viechtach and Bogen railway stations. Check the current timetable before travelling.
