Bodenwöhr offers three distinct ways to plan your trip: art along the shores of Lake Hammersee, seasonal activities on the water, and routes through the municipality and its districts. This can help you decide what you want to shape your stay. If you want to focus on the lake, you’ll find the Art and Water Trail and seasonal activities on Lake Hammersee. If you’d rather explore a route, you can choose between the circular cycling routes, which highlight the landscape, and the pilgrimage trail, which focuses on the history of the buildings.

Art and activities at Lake Hammersee

Twelve sculptures adorn the Art and Water Trail along the shores of Lake Hammersee. The number may change when the installations are updated. The sculptures add a cultural touch to the lakeside trail. If you’d like to combine art and the lake as part of one experience, this offers a specific point of interest for planning your trip.

When weather conditions are suitable, trips on a traditional flat-bottomed boat, the “Karin I,” are available on Lake Hammersee by prior request; in good weather, they run until the end of September. From May to September, pedal boats, rowboats and stand-up paddleboards can be rented at the “Im Seewinkl” bathing area in good weather. The options differ in both how you get around and how you plan: the boat trip requires a prior request, while rentals at the bathing area depend on the stated season and good weather. Check these seasonal conditions when planning your water activity.

Cycling routes, districts and architectural history

Three circular cycling routes explore the municipality of Bodenwöhr, passing small villages and large, untouched forest areas. The Bodenwöhr Pilgrimage Trail connects the various districts and brings the history of the buildings along the route to life. These offer different perspectives: the circular cycling routes are defined by villages and forests, while the pilgrimage trail focuses on architectural history along its route through the districts. If you’re interested in architectural history, you could make the pilgrimage trail a focus of your visit; the circular cycling routes place the emphasis on the landscape. The extensively renovated St. Koloman Chapel is located in Warmersdorf.

Regional perspective: Schwandorf

The Schwandorf district is a holiday destination in Bavaria’s Upper Palatinate Forest. The Upper Palatinate Lake District is located in Schwandorf district, a region shaped by water and diverse landscapes. At the regional level, the Weiher Cycle Route runs for around nine kilometres, is signposted throughout in both directions, connects Schwandorf with Lake Murner and passes through the Charlottenhofer Weiher nature reserve. This is a clearly defined regional cycling route; by contrast, the three circular cycling routes explore the municipality of Bodenwöhr.

Gneiss at Hochfels in Schwandorf district has also been included in Bavaria’s list of the 100 most beautiful geotopes. The Forest and Heath Landscape nature reserve provides a valuable refuge for species that cannot survive in more densely vegetated, nutrient-rich habitats. Thus, the regional picture includes not only water-shaped landscapes but also geology and a special habitat.
