Pfarrkirchen’s cultural history can be explored through places with different focuses: churches and a Late Gothic central-plan building sit alongside a museum, art in public spaces and recurring events. At the town square, on Gartlberg and along Ringallee, you can encounter different facets of the town. When planning your stay, you can choose between architectural history, religious sites and cultural events.

Town Square and Historic Buildings

The Old Town Hall is located at the northwestern corner of the town square. Its museum displays examples of historic crafts and folk art from Pfarrkirchen and the central Rottal area. The exhibits connect local history with a broader regional context: their origins include both Pfarrkirchen and the central Rottal area.

The Erasmus House, formerly known as the Erasmus Chapel, offers a distinctive feature. This 15th-century octagonal central-plan building with a tented roof is among the region’s most remarkable Late Gothic buildings. The Catholic town parish church, meanwhile, is dedicated to the Apostles Simon and Jude Thaddeus.

Gartlberg and the Stations of the Cross

The Marian pilgrimage church on Gartlberg, also known as Gartlberg Church, is a distinctive landmark of Pfarrkirchen. In 1972, the carved Stations of the Cross from the town parish church were incorporated into the 15-station Way of the Cross on the route to Gartlberg. This establishes a specific historical connection between two religious sites: the carved Stations of the Cross were moved from the town parish church to the Way of the Cross on Gartlberg. The churches’ names and architecture, as well as this documented connection, are interesting points of reference for a cultural history visit.

Ringallee: City History and Art in Public Spaces

Ringallee encircles Pfarrkirchen’s old town and was laid out on the former ramparts. It is considered unique in Lower Bavaria. Its features include remnants of the old town wall, dating from 1558, various fountains and green spaces. An international sculpture exhibition featuring works by prominent 20th- and 21st-century sculptors adds to this blend of city history and designed open spaces. Ringallee thus offers a different cultural focus from the individual churches and historic buildings: here, the history of the town’s fortifications, green spaces and sculpture come together in the public realm.

Exhibitions and Recurring Events

The Hans-Reiffenstuel House is a former warehouse in the railway station area. It houses an exhibition space, the local music centre and the public library, which features the permanent exhibition “Local Wildlife.” Check current opening details before your visit. In cooperation with the Münchener Secession artists’ association, several prestigious art exhibitions are held each year on the ground floor, with free admission. As the programme changes, it is advisable to check which exhibition is currently on before you visit.

Traditional horse races are held every year over the Whitsun weekend at Bavaria’s oldest racecourse. If you would like to plan your trip around this recurring event, check the specific event dates in advance. The secularised hospital church is used for concerts and theatre performances, as well as for a nativity scene exhibition during the Christmas season. It is open only for these occasions; check the relevant dates when planning your visit.

Culture in the Wider Destination of Rottal-Inn

Across the wider destination of Rottal-Inn, the “Gothic Tours” guide locals and visitors to selected Gothic monuments. Resources include brochures, maps, the tour portal and the Gothic portal. The Gothic portal offers audio guides to Gothic buildings that can be accessed on site, as well as an online museum with information, knowledge and learning resources. This regional overview complements Pfarrkirchen’s specific cultural sites with further opportunities to explore Gothic architecture across the Rottal-Inn destination.
