The municipality of Rimsting extends in terraces from the western shore of the Chiemsee, including Schafwaschener Bucht, to the 693-metre-high Ratzinger Höhe. This gives you a way to plan your trip around the lake shore and higher ground. If you are looking for a hotel in Rimsting, you can plan your days according to whether you want to visit a viewpoint, take a trail with a stated duration or follow a longer themed route. The trails in Rimsting vary in length, scenery and focus.

Lake Shore and Views

Ludwigshöhe, above Rimsting, is a viewpoint popular with many painters and photographers. From there, the view extends across the Bavarian Sea to Frauenchiemsee, Herrenchiemsee and Krautinsel, as well as to the panorama of the Chiemgau Alps. Rimsting’s natural swimming area is located at Schafwaschener Bucht. It lies directly on the Chiemsee circular and cycling route and has a kiosk and an e-bike charging station. Check whether the kiosk and charging station are available before your visit.

Trails with Different Highlights

The stone trail starts at Rimsting parish church, is around 5 kilometres long and takes about two hours. Along the way, it showcases rocks of different sizes and types. The Ratzinger Höhe Discovery Trail starts at the free car park by Rimsting church, where the trail is also marked with its special symbol. Its approximately 10 kilometres run through dark forests and sunny flower meadows, with 14 stations along the way. The trail was designed for families and is suitable for children aged five and up. This gives you the choice between a shorter geological trail and a longer route with numerous stations. It is worth checking the trail conditions before setting out on the Discovery Trail.

The easy circular route to the Chiemsee covers 6.3 kilometres, passing through the village of Rimsting and reaching Rimsting’s lakeside facilities on the Chiemsee. The stated duration is 1 hour and 47 minutes. This is close to the stone trail’s approximate two-hour duration, even though the circular route around the Chiemsee is longer. Comparing the two can help with planning your day if you do not want to use distance alone to estimate how long a route will take.

For longer distances, there are two other options: The 16-kilometre Fruit and Culture Trail runs from Bad Endorf through Rimsting to Prien and is lined with around 300 different fruit trees. The Prientaler River Landscape is a 36.7-kilometre hiking route with several possible starting points; its route runs from Aschau to Rimsting. The Fruit and Culture Trail passes through Rimsting, while Rimsting is the endpoint of the described section of the Prientaler route.

Church History and an Annual Event

The furnishings of St. Nicholas Parish Church also tell a part of Rimsting’s history: the high altar and pulpit once stood in the collegiate church on Herrenchiemsee and were acquired for Rimsting church after secularisation in 1803. Another event takes place on a fixed date: the Christkindl salute by Rimsting’s traditional gun salute group. It is held every year on 24 December at Ludwigshöhe. If you are planning your visit around this date, check the specific event details in advance, as the exact arrangements may change.
