The Baroque hall church of St. John the Baptist and the hiking stage to Sterntaler Filze give Kleinholzhausen two different travel highlights: architectural history in the village and a nature experience on a wide path into the moor. When planning, you can choose between a cultural focus and a hike. The wider travel destination of Raubling offers further moorland and nature experiences. When making your choice, it is not only the moorland theme that matters, but also the type of experience: a hiking stage, a walk, an educational station and a guided tour are different offerings.

St. John the Baptist and its architectural history

St. John the Baptist is a Catholic church in Kleinholzhausen. It is a Baroque hall church attributed to Abraham Millauer and dated to the years 1732 to 1735; the building includes a western roof turret. A hall church is characterized by a single, continuous main space. A roof turret is a tower-like structure on the roof; here, it is on the west side. The attribution to Millauer and the dating serve different purposes: they associate the building with a person and place it in a particular period. Early modern archaeological finds beneath the ground in the area of the Catholic branch church of St. John the Baptist are also part of the site’s history. They add another layer of history to the view of the Baroque architecture and give the church area an archaeological connection.

Paths to Sterntaler Filze

The easy, 12.2-kilometer hiking stage “Kleinholzhausen > Bad Feilnbach” leads from Kleinholzhausen to Sterntaler Filze along a wide path. The length and easy difficulty rating are different planning details: the distance indicates the extent of the stage, while the rating indicates its level of difficulty. In the area around Kleinholzhausen, Sterntaler Filze also offers a family-friendly walk with moorland educational stations, sculptures and puzzles. These features combine nature topics with learning and discovery, giving the walk its own character. If you would like to include a route with a clear distance in your trip, you can use the stage as a guide; if you are interested in learning stations and puzzles, consider the walk as a separate option. Both offerings relate to the moorland landscape, but involve different types of activity.

Moorland landscapes in the wider travel destination of Raubling

In the municipality of Raubling, wetland habitats such as floodplain areas, moor forests and wet meadows are being sustainably protected. These landscape types broaden the focus on nature beyond raised bogs alone: they represent several kinds of wetland habitat in Raubling. The 650-hectare raised bog of Hochrunst- and Sterntaler Filze includes a nature-oriented visitor and education center; activities and guided moorland tours are also offered. Nicklheim Moor Station is designed as an environmental education center for schools. The Nicklheim Moor Station experience hike first leads to a birdwatching station, then past the Green Classroom and a peat worker’s hut to a viewing platform overlooking the moor. The station and the hike are two different forms of environmental education: one is intended for schools, while the other connects several named stops along a route.

Nicklheimer Filze is a habitat for peat mosses, sundews, numerous dragonfly species and many rare bird species, particularly during the bird migration season. For nature enthusiasts, the seasonal aspect of birdlife is therefore also something to consider when planning a trip; plants, dragonflies and bird species together add to the picture of this moorland habitat.
