In Großeibstadt, local history and active exploration come together as distinct travel interests: the Schmiedstor, the forge associated with it, and the parish church offer historical points of interest, while the Großeibstadt Seelenstühle and marked cycle routes around the village add their own highlights. Its location in the valley of the Franconian Saale completes the picture of the village.

History at the Schmiedstor and in Großeibstadt

The Schmiedstor in Großeibstadt was first mentioned in official records in 1631. The forge associated with the gate dates from around 1900 and retains original tools and historical furnishings. Two distinct periods are therefore in focus: the gate’s first mention in official records and the later date of the forge. The parish church is also part of the village’s older architectural history. It was built in 1611–1612 under the rule of Prince-Bishop Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn; its construction therefore predates the Schmiedstor’s first mention in official records. Großeibstadt has a compact historic center that provides a distinctive setting for these historical points of interest.

Circular route and cycling

The Großeibstadt Seelenstühle form a circular route through and around Großeibstadt. At 13 stops, short meditations focus on topics such as happiness, sadness, relaxation, unity and expansiveness. These themes give the route a different character from the village’s historical stops: here, the focus is on brief reflections along the way. Marked cycle routes around Großeibstadt invite you to enjoy nature and scenic beauty. The cycle route between Bad Neustadt a. d. Saale and Bad Königshofen i. Grabfeld also passes through Kleineibstadt and Großeibstadt. If you plan to take this route, it is worth checking the route before setting off.

Plan your stay

When looking for hotels in Großeibstadt, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your stay: would you like to explore the village’s history, discover the Seelenstühle circular route, or include cycle routes in your plans?

In the wider Rhön-Grabfeld destination

Rhön-Grabfeld lies within the Rhön UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The region offers a range of distinct attractions for nature lovers: the Lange Rhön is Bavaria’s largest nature reserve outside the Alps. The Schwarzes Moor is strictly protected as a core zone of the biosphere reserve. A wooden boardwalk leads through parts of the moor, information boards explain the route, and an observation tower offers impressive views of the Schwarzes Moor.

At Gangolfsberg, the nature reserve is part of the core zone of the Rhön UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The Gangolfsberg nature trail also provides an opportunity to explore the basalt column wall. It formed 30 to 10 million years ago during volcanic activity in the Rhön. The trail is about 2.5 kilometers long; sturdy footwear is required. Guided group tours are available on request. Another hiking option in Rhön-Grabfeld district is the premium hiking trail “DER HOCHRHÖNER.”

The wider Rhön-Grabfeld destination also offers a range of cultural attractions. In Ostheim vor der Rhön, the fortified church was declared a monument of national significance in 2003; it is Germany’s largest and particularly well-preserved fortified church. The fortified church museum in Ostheim presents a dozen more fortified churches from the region, including those in Nordheim, Oberstreu and Kaltensundheim.

The Franconian Open-Air Museum Fladungen brings 350 years of rural everyday history in Lower Franconia and the Rhön to life through faithfully reconstructed houses and farms. The 12-hectare museum site contains around 30 historic buildings, including farmhouses, craft buildings and a village school. Hands-on activities about crafts and traditions include demonstrations, practical courses and events. Wechterswinkel Monastery houses a district cultural center for visual arts, music, literature and lifestyle; the ground-floor gallery features contemporary art, with a focus on sculpture. These regional destinations offer different highlights from Großeibstadt’s local history and trails, adding distinct cultural and nature themes to your trip planning.
