Unterelsbach combines a village church visible from afar with several Rhön circular trails, each with its own focus. The Sow Oak Festival on Ascension Day and the Sow Oak Run in June add to the appeal. This makes architectural history, nature destinations and recurring event dates interesting aspects to consider when planning. For a hike, the approximate duration of Rhön Circular Trail 1 provides a useful guide.

Church and Architectural History

The Church of St. Simon and Jude Thaddeus stands on a hill and has shaped the appearance of the Rhön village of Unterelsbach from afar for centuries. As of April 15, 2026, it is listed as a protected monument in the Bavarian monument register. Formerly a choir-tower church, it is now a hall church with a recessed west choir and an east tower topped by a pointed spire. The tower retains its barrel-vaulted medieval ground floor, which served as the choir; the tower was renovated in a post-Gothic style in 1615–17. The nave has a gabled roof, while the choir has a hipped roof dating from 1810. The building thus brings together medieval fabric, a post-Gothic tower renovation and a later-dated choir roof. Its architectural features make the church’s different stages of development easy to trace.

Hiking Trails with Different Focuses

Rhön Circular Trail 1, “Five Districts,” starts at the sports ground in Unterelsbach. It is 15.9 kilometers long and takes about 5.5 hours. Within the wider travel destination of Oberelsbach, this moderate circular trail connects all five districts of the market municipality. The approximate duration helps you plan for the hike as a longer activity.

Rhön Circular Trail 10, “To the Sow Oak,” also starts at the sports ground and leads to the natural monument, the Sow Oak, at a rest area. Along the way, it offers open views of Kreuzberg, near Bischofsheim, and Himmeldunkberg, whose treeless, “bald” summit is a striking sight. This route puts both the oak as a destination and the views in the foreground.

Rhön Circular Trail 8, “Hart Forest and Hundsrücken,” starts at the car park for the butterfly nature trail on the road to Unterelsbach and follows the Elsbach for part of the route. Rhön Circular Trail 9, “Butterfly Nature Trail,” is suitable for families. The trail names and descriptions offer different starting points for choosing a route based on its theme.

Sow Oak Festival, Run and Guided Tours

The Unterelsbach branch of the Rhön Club holds the Sow Oak Festival every year on Ascension Day. Hikers are invited to stop for refreshments at the large old oak, where food and drinks are served. The TSV Unterelsbach Sow Oak Run takes place annually in June. Anyone who enjoys getting around under their own steam can take part. The varied routes mostly follow field and forest tracks; the main race offers views of Kreuzberg and Heidelstein. The route and organizational arrangements may vary from year to year. While the festival centers on stopping for refreshments by the oak, the run is a sporting way to experience the area in motion.

Certified nature and landscape guide Michael Tulit is based in Unterelsbach and offers guided tours focused on the Lange Rhön. Examples include the Hochrhön Tour, guided visits to the Black Moor and tours around Gangolfsberg. These guided outings complement the local circular trails with additional themes and destinations.
