Regenhütte combines hiking trails with a history shaped by the glassmaking tradition of the Bavarian Forest. When planning, it is worth distinguishing between the different trail lengths and themes: from the 10-kilometre Glashüttensteig to the longer riverside hiking trail, as well as a natural toboggan run and attractions in the village itself.

Hiking trails of different lengths

The Rabensteiner Glashüttensteig leads from Rabenstein to Regenhütte. This hike, rated easy, is 10.0 kilometres long. The riverside hiking trail from Bayerisch Eisenstein to Regen is quite different in scale: It is just under 30 kilometres long and, after the junction for Arberhütte, continues through mixed forest and along the Seebachschleife to Regenhütte. There, Regenhütte is a peaceful resting place surrounded by nature. Check local conditions before setting out; they can vary depending on the season.

Regenhütte is also on the Gläserner Steig, a trail almost 100 kilometres long through the Bavarian Forest. It connects former and still-operating glassworks, along with other reminders of the glassmaking tradition. So the choice of route differs not only in its stated length: the Rabensteiner Glashüttensteig leads specifically from Rabenstein to Regenhütte, while the Gläserner Steig takes in the broader context of glassmaking culture.

Winter and attractions in the village

The natural toboggan run is on a sunny meadow on the outskirts of the village and is ideal for families when snow conditions are suitable. Snow is the key requirement for this winter activity. Outside the tobogganing season, visitors to Regenhütte will find a newly built public barbecue area with a Kneipp pool along the hiking and cycling routes. Local conditions may change, so plan your visit to this facility accordingly.

The annual calendar also includes the traditional Midsummer bonfire in the village of Regenhütte. It is held every year with musical entertainment and local culinary specialities. If you would like to combine your stay with the festival, check the date for the relevant year.

Glassmaking tradition and culture in Bayerisch Eisenstein

Regenhütte is the site of the former “Rabensteiner Neue Hütte.” In Bayerisch Eisenstein, a long glassmaking tradition is complemented by other cultural attractions: the glassmaking demonstrations at the Schauglashütte on Bahnhofsallee present this tradition in a modern way. At the Grenzglashütte, visitors can experience the craft of glassmaking up close; contact the operator for current visitor information.

Since 2011, the NaturparkWelten exhibition on railway history and the natural environment of this border town has been housed in the German section of the border station in Bayerisch Eisenstein. The border station is also defined by its unique location: the national border runs through its centre. The exhibition spans five levels and includes a European bat centre, a model railway, a ski museum and an interactive exhibition about the Großer Arber. For current visitor information, contact the operator.

The Localbahnmuseum Bayerisch Eisenstein is housed in a former locomotive shed built in 1877 by the Royal Privileged Bavarian Eastern Railway Company. Its tour covers the history of the Bavarian local railway from 1876 to the present day. The museum includes more than 20 historic steam and diesel locomotives from different periods, as well as other exhibits.

More trails and events in Bayerisch Eisenstein

All of the village’s hiking trails start at the Bayerisch Eisenstein hiking park. The park has a natural Kneipp facility and a small adventure playground for children. Two Goldsteig stages can be distinguished by their stated endpoints: N14 connects Bayerisch Eisenstein with Großer Arber, while N15 connects Bayerisch Eisenstein with Großer Falkenstein. These trails and facilities are in Bayerisch Eisenstein and are therefore a separate part of your travel planning.

The events calendar also offers some regular highlights: a New Year’s concert is held every year on 1 January in the village square of Bayerisch Eisenstein, with holidaymakers and locals invited to attend. At the beginning of September, the Bavarian Forest National Park and the municipality hold a large mushroom exhibition there at the Eisensteiner ArberLandHalle. Check the dates for the relevant year if either event is important to your travel plans.
