Castle history, church art and forest trails offer different ways to explore Reichertshausen. The three designated hiking routes vary in length and elevation gain, while the castle and parish church each tell their own stories of architecture and art. Choose what interests you most, whether historical details or time on the trails.

The History of Reichertshausen Castle

Reichertshausen Castle is a late Gothic moated building set in extensive parkland. The three-wing complex has an inner courtyard enclosed by a high wall. Gothic frescoes were uncovered in the archway in 1979/80. These dates refer to the uncovering, not to when the frescoes were created.

The castle’s history also includes its chapel: Joseph von Weichs had it built in 1714 in honour of the Fourteen Holy Helpers. That same year, Johannes Frhr. von Eckher, Prince-Bishop of Freising, consecrated the chapel. This distinguishes two dates: the chapel’s construction and consecration in 1714, and the much later uncovering of the frescoes in 1979/80.

Compare Forest Trails by Length

Choose from a short, medium or long route for your hike. The short route is 2.5 kilometres long with 52 metres of elevation gain; the medium route is 4.1 kilometres with 62 metres of elevation gain; and the long route is 6.3 kilometres with 84 metres of elevation gain. Compared with the short route, the long route is 3.8 kilometres longer and has 32 metres more elevation gain; the medium route falls between the two on both measures.

The routes lead mostly through the forest, mainly along gravelled forestry roads and, in some places, forest trails. Check the current hiking map before setting out. Reichertshausen, IlmmĂĽnster and Paunzhausen have also worked together on a network of forest hiking trails in the Wittelsbach Forest.

Church Art at St. Stephen’s

St. Stephen’s is the parish church of Reichertshausen. Inside is a baptismal font featuring John the Baptist, created around 1500. The church also contains early Renaissance depictions of St. Stephen and John the Baptist, also created around 1500. The font and depictions therefore date from a similar period; John the Baptist appears in both, while the depictions also show St. Stephen.

The Wider Region: Pfaffenhofen An Der Ilm

The wider destination of Pfaffenhofen An Der Ilm offers another perspective on the region. The southern part of the Pfaffenhofen a.d. Ilm district is characterised by tertiary hill country with gentle elevations and valleys. The district has well-signposted cycle paths in the river valleys, as well as cycling tours centred on asparagus and hops. Many municipalities also invite visitors to enjoy nature along themed hiking trails and walking paths.

The wider destination also offers a cultural attraction: the German Hop Museum in Wolnzach. It explores more than 1,000 years of hop-growing history, displays historic hop weighing slips and introduces visitors to the art of brewing beer. Seasonal blueberry picking is available in fields between Pfaffenhofen and Rohrbach and in the Feilenmoos. Check availability before you go.
