Those considering Tiefenbach as a travel destination will find a range of themes: hiking and cycling routes associated with the Ilz, Gaißatal and Danube, as well as cultural history centred on the local history museum, former castle and boundary stones.

Trails along the Ilz and Danube

The Goldsteig hiking trail runs along the Ilz within the municipality, as does a route through the Gaißatal to the Danube. The circular hiking trail 3 has a specific starting point and approximate length: it begins at the Mausmühle car park and runs for about seven kilometres along the Ilz. The starting point and distance provide useful planning information; check the local trail details before setting out.

Four Chapel Cycling and Hiking Routes lead locals and visitors from chapel to chapel through the countryside of the municipalities of Ruderting and Tiefenbach; they are signposted. Their shared chapel theme sets them apart from the circular trail along the Ilz. Visitors can rent a Zille boat at the Ilz reservoir. Check the current rental arrangements before travelling.

Local History Museum, Castle and Boundary Stones

The local history museum is dedicated to the area’s secular, ecclesiastical and everyday history, and collects objects of cultural and historical interest. It is housed in the “Old Schoolhouse”, built in 1906. The museum’s subject matter thus meets the history of the building itself.

The former Haselbach Hofmark Castle is a small four-wing complex with a risalit and enclosed courtyard. A risalit is a section of the façade that projects outward; together with the four wings and enclosed courtyard, it describes the castle’s architectural form.

Two boundary stones have stood in Lohwald, on the border with the neighbouring municipality of Ruderting, since 1691. They marked the boundary between Kurbayern and the Prince-Bishopric of Passau and are known locally as “Kaisa and Kini”. The stones thus point to a former political boundary.

In the wider Passau travel region, the Bavarian Forest Museum Village in Tittling adds a large open-air museum to the picture of local history: it is one of the largest in Europe. Visitors can explore more than 100 residential and agricultural buildings from the Bavarian Forest, dating from 1580 to 1890, across 20 hectares. The collection includes farmhouses, mills, sawmills, smithies, chapels and field monuments, as well as Germany’s oldest elementary school, dating from 1666. Unlike the local history museum in Tiefenbach, the museum village presents numerous historic buildings in their regional context.

Also in the wider Passau travel region, the Haus am Strom Nature Experience Centre is located in the narrow Danube valley between Bavaria and Austria, downstream from Untergriesbach.
