Pocking offers two distinct ways to enjoy a stay: archaeological history and themes related to water, views and activity. The permanent exhibition “Drehscheibe Pocking” focuses on traces from three millennia on the Pockinger Heide; at the swimming lake and Roman Tower, the expanse of water and views of the Rott Valley provide a different focus. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether cultural history or the landscape should be the deciding factor.
Archaeological Traces and City Landmarks
The permanent archaeological exhibition “Drehscheibe Pocking” opened in February 2007. It is housed in a roughly 75 m² adjoining room of the Pocking municipal library. It presents traces of Celts, Romans and Bavarians who have visited the Pockinger Heide over the past three millennia. On display are finds from several excavations carried out after the local Roman settlement was discovered in 1951.
This brings together a compact exhibition space of around 75 m² and a broad view spanning many centuries. The bronze statue “Rolling Mare” is Pocking’s unofficial landmark. Together with the permanent exhibition, it offers two distinct ways to engage with culture: a single work of art and an archaeological presentation featuring finds from several excavations.
Water, Views and Activity
The Roman Tower in Pocking is around 20 metres high. From its platform, panoramic views extend across the Rott Valley and, in foehn conditions, as far as the Alps. This distinction is important when planning your visit: the Rott Valley is part of the panoramic view described, while distant views of the Alps are explicitly dependent on foehn conditions.
The swimming lake at the Roman Tower on Füssinger Straße has a sunbathing lawn of 22,000 m² and a water area of about 30 ha. The water area is therefore considerably larger than the sunbathing lawn. The activity trail for all generations is located at the gravel pit lake in Schlupfing Landscape Park, adding opportunities for movement to the themes of views and water.
Passau as the Wider Region
In the wider Passau travel region, the Bavarian Forest Museum Village in Tittling offers a distinct focus on cultural history. Across 20 hectares, visitors can explore more than 100 residential and agricultural buildings from the Bavarian Forest dating from 1580 to 1890. The village includes farmsteads, mills, sawmills, smithies, chapels and field monuments; Germany’s oldest primary school, dating from 1666, is also part of the museum. By comparison, Pocking’s permanent exhibition brings together archaeological traces and finds, while Tittling focuses on an extensive ensemble of historic buildings.
Another regional nature attraction is the Haus am Strom Nature Experience Centre, located in the Danube’s narrow valley between Bavaria and Austria, downstream from Untergriesbach. In the Passau region, rivers, forests and thermal spas shape the landscape; thermal springs known far and wide can be found in Bad Füssing and Bad Griesbach.
