Aisterham brings together historical connections with the Lordship of Haidenburg, two clearly identified farm complexes and Aisterham Neustift Chapel. The town’s history spans early documents and a biographical trace from the 19th century. This means that local and architectural history are at the heart of your travel decision.

Historical Traces in Aisterham

A 1423 deed of sale listed two farms in Aisterham as part of the Lordship of Haidenburg. In 1461, Count Georg III of Ortenburg acquired some rents from Aisterham. A document from the Bavarian State Archives dated 3 June 1484 mentions the name form Aystershaim in connection with tithes in the Lordship of Haidenburg. Around 1612, a tax register of the lordship recorded four properties in Aisterham as belonging to it.

Alongside these connections with the lordship, there is a biographical trace: Georg Seil was born in Aisterham in 1858, the son of a master tailor.

Aisterham Neustift Chapel is located at Aisterham 4, 94496 Ortenburg.

Farm Complexes and Architectural History

The Bavarian List of Monuments (as of 21 February 2026) lists Aisterham 2 as the residential building of a former four-sided farmstead; the house dates from the 18th or 19th century. Aisterham 3 is a four-sided farmstead from the same period. The two entries focus on different features: Aisterham 2 on the residential building of a former farm complex, and Aisterham 3 on the four-sided farmstead itself.

The Aisterham 3 four-sided farmstead includes a through-barn with a timber-framed base, a central threshing floor and a steeply pitched roof, as well as a block-built granary. The granary has a gabled roof and a projecting eaves section above the wagon shed and stable.

More Experiences in the Ortenburg Destination

The wider Ortenburg destination also includes the Ortenburg Knights’ Tournament. Held every year at the foot of Ortenburg Castle, the event features tournament games, a historic market, traditional craft workshops, camp life and birds of prey demonstrations. Check the current event dates before your visit. In 2025, the Ortenburg Castle Museum displayed the original furnishings of the castle pharmacy from the estate of Günther Heumann.

Another highlight is the Ortenburg Castle Wildlife Park. A well-signposted circular trail leads through the approximately 25-hectare park in a natural setting, past animal enclosures and aviaries. The grounds also include information boards and benches; some of the original planting from the former castle park of the Counts of Ortenburg has been preserved. The park can be explored along well-maintained paths. The wildlife park lists its daily admission hours as 09:00 to 17:30, with closing time at 19:00. Check the current hours with the operator before your visit.

Irgenöd Zoo in Ortenburg is home to more than 90 exotic and native animal species; the number of species may change. The named highlights differ if you are choosing a nature-focused activity: the wildlife park emphasizes its grounds and circular trail, while Irgenöd focuses on the variety of animal species.
