Friesenried can be explored through three distinct highlights: native birds and interactive features take centre stage on the bird nature trail, St. Joseph’s Parish Church tells the story of a new building constructed in 1929, and a cycling tour with very few climbs leads from Lauchdorf via Friesenried to Bad Wörishofen. This lets you make nature, local history or a route connecting several named places the focus of your stay.
Bird Nature Trail: Birds, Puzzles and Nest Boxes
The Friesenried Bird Nature Trail features 50 native bird species at 25 stations. It also includes a bird quiz, a Bandolino puzzle and a listening funnel. The combination of the bird species on display and these different features gives the trail both an informative and a playful character.
The bird nature trail also has a wooden pavilion called Vogelnest (Bird’s Nest). You can look inside nest boxes through a tube. Since summer 2025, the trail has also included a sandarium: an artificially created, sunny sandy nesting site for ground-nesting wild bees and other insects. This means the same destination brings together bird-related features and a site specifically created for ground-nesting insects.
Getting There and Group Visits
The bird nature trail can be reached via the OAL3 and Road 2055. Parking is available at the car park in Aschthal in the Königsberger Forst. Thus, both of the named roads and a specific car park are provided for your journey.
The forest stage in Friesenried was established as an extension of the Green Classroom at the LBV Bird Nature Trail. Groups wishing to visit the Green Classroom can register with the Friesenried Primary School office: 08347 207. This gives groups planning a visit a specific point of contact for registration.
Cycling Route and Winter Option
A cycling tour with very few climbs leads from Lauchdorf via Friesenried to Bad Wörishofen. If you would like to include a cycling route in your stay, this one follows a clearly defined course through named places and has one explicitly described feature: its gentle gradients. Unlike the bird nature trail, the focus here is not on a single destination with stations, but on a tour connecting several places.
The best-known cross-country ski trail in the municipality starts in Friesenried’s Aschthal. This is a seasonal winter option alongside the bird nature trail and cycling tour. When planning your stay, you can therefore treat cross-country skiing as a separate focus; the trail is available only during the winter season.
Churches and Architectural History
St. Joseph’s Parish Church marks a clear turning point in Friesenried’s architectural history. The Baroque Joseph’s Church, built in 1695, was demolished and replaced in 1929 by a modern, understated new building. After this new building was completed, the church became the parish church for Friesenried and Salenwang. Its history therefore includes both a Baroque predecessor and the later, understated building and its status as a parish church.
Nearby, between Friesenried and Salenwang, stands the Church of St. Bartholomew and St. Cyriacus. It was consecrated on 29 October 1508. The choir, nave and church tower are Late Gothic, while the current furnishings are Late Baroque. In contrast to St. Joseph’s, the key historical features here are its consecration in 1508 and the combination of Late Gothic architectural elements with Late Baroque furnishings.
Also nearby is the chapel on Riedberg, southeast of Friesenried.
