The season and the activities you have in mind are good starting points when choosing a stay in Steibis. In winter, the village offers winter walking trails and extensive ski runs; on the Imberg, you’ll find circular trails and other activities. If you’re looking for a hotel in Steibis, first decide what you’d like to focus on during your trip. This will help you plan your days around the season and the experiences that interest you.

Steibis in the Nagelfluhkette Nature Park

Steibis and Aach are in the Nagelfluhkette Nature Park and form a recreation area near Oberstaufen for nature lovers. The nature park includes five landscape conservation areas, including the Hörnergruppe, the Nagelfluhkette and the Großer Alpsee. This landscape sets the scene for different kinds of stays: you can focus on hiking or choose Steibis as a base for winter activities.

The wider destination of Oberstaufen also includes the Hochgrat and the Nagelfluhkette, which rise above Oberstaufen. At 1,834 metres, the Hochgrat is the highest mountain in the western Allgäu. The Hochgratbahn is located in Oberstaufen-Steibis and takes visitors to Oberstaufen’s local mountain at alpine altitudes; its operating schedule is seasonal.

Hiking and activities on the Imberg

The Alperlebnispfad trail crosses the high plateau on the Imberg. The signposted circular trail has 47 stations in total, with information about the region and Allgäu alpine farming. It combines physical activity with a clear thematic focus. If you’re interested in the landscape and work on the alpine pastures, the stations can add an extra theme to your hike.

Another circular hike leads to the veteran trees through the alpine pasture area between the Hochgrat and the Imberg. The two routes have different focuses: the Alperlebnispfad centres on its 47 stations, while the veteran tree loop passes through the alpine pasture area between the two mountains.

The Imberg is also home to the MounTeens detective trail. Families can follow the smugglers’ trail and solve a case. The high ropes course is right in the hiking area and can be reached on foot from either the valley or mountain station of the Imbergbahn. Access conditions may vary by season, so check them before your visit.

Plan winter activities and your journey

In winter, Steibis offers idyllic winter walking trails and extensive ski runs. These activities are quite different from the circular trails and other options on the Imberg. So consider whether you’re planning your stay mainly for winter walks, skiing or activities in another season. Seasonal conditions may vary, and mountain lifts also operate on a seasonal basis.

You can reach Oberstaufen by train; from there, bus route 95 runs to the centre of Steibis. Timetables and connections may change, so check your route before travelling.

Oberstaufen in the wider region

The wider destination of Oberstaufen can also help guide your plans. Three mountain lifts there take you up into the mountains or make it easier to descend back into the valley. Four hiking trails in Oberstaufen have been awarded the German Hiking Institute’s Premium Hiking Trail certification. These regional options complement the specific activities in Steibis and may help you decide what to focus on during your stay.
