A stay in Blaichach can be planned around the seasons and your particular interests: chapels and recurring festivals shape the local cultural offering, while nearby hiking trails, a cross-country ski trail and waterside destinations offer more to explore. Which of these aspects you would like to discover can also play a role in choosing when to travel.

Church, chapel and living traditions

The Catholic Chapel of St. Florian, dating from the 18th century, stands in the district of Altmummen. Its magnificent altar shrine makes it a special destination for travellers interested in sacred architecture. The Catholic Church of St. Martin is also in Blaichach and offers further insight into the local church landscape.

A regular event in the annual calendar is the Martinusritt, a horseback procession with a blessing of the horses, which has taken place every year in Blaichach since 1652. If you travel during Advent, you can also make a note of the Blaichach Advent Market: it is held annually on the eve of the first Sunday of Advent in the paved forecourt of the church and town hall. The two events mark different points in the calendar—the Martinusritt represents a long-standing local tradition, while the market marks the start of Advent.

Gunzesried and seasonal activities

Blaichach’s district of Gunzesried is known for its flora, fauna and hiking trails. The Viehscheid takes place there every year on 17 September. In the Gunzesried Valley, herders bring their herds down from the alpine pastures into the valley in mid-September; the Viehscheid thus connects a specific time of year for travel with a traditional form of the seasonal descent from the alpine pastures.

During the warmer months, the Käse-Kräuter-Sommer (Cheese and Herb Summer) in Blaichach offers guided hikes and workshops. The programme is listed as running from 1 June to 30 September. It complements the option of exploring the surrounding trails independently with guided activities and workshops. If you would like to plan your visit around a particular activity, check the relevant dates before travelling.

Trails and nearby destinations

The 3-Lakes Loop starts at Blaichach railway station and follows the Iller Cycle Path to Inselsee. There, you’ll find water ski lifts, an Aqua Park and Aqua Chimp, as well as a café and beer garden. As opening may depend on the season, it is worth checking the current activities before your visit. This allows you to think of the route and time by the lake as separate parts of an excursion, without treating the waterside activities as available all year round.

For winter, the Gunzesried-Säge cross-country ski trail is another option nearby: it is 12.5 kilometres long and classified as difficult. Snow conditions and trail grooming can vary. Its length and stated difficulty offer specific guidance when choosing a route; check current conditions before using it.

More destinations in the Oberallgäu

The wider Oberallgäu destination also has its own places to visit. Oberstdorf has 200 kilometres of hiking trails and nature trails. Visitors can also tour the Heini-Klopfer ski flying hill there; the tower lift takes them to the observation platform on the ski jump tower.

The Nagelfluhkette Nature Park Centre is located in Immenstadt-Bühl, right by Lake Alpsee. Its free-entry interactive exhibition explores animals, plants, their habitats and the special features of the protected area. From Immenstadt railway station, you can reach the centre on foot in 30 minutes via the “Achis Wasserweg” themed trail. In bad weather, bus routes 39, 11 and 81 go there; check the journey time and bus availability before setting off. These destinations are part of the Oberallgäu and are distinct from Blaichach’s local activities.

Your trip can therefore focus on different things: fixed-date events such as the Martinusritt and Advent Market, seasonal activities in Blaichach and Gunzesried, or trails and destinations in the wider Oberallgäu. Compare these options with the timing of your stay, then choose accommodation to suit your trip.
