Unterjoch lies on a sun plateau at an altitude of 1,013 metres, surrounded by mountains and nestled in the Allgäu Alps. On a morning walk towards Oberjoch, with views of Hindelang, a vast sea of white fog may occasionally appear between the mountains.

Mountain Scenery and Farming

Around Unterjoch, 20 mountain farms still actively manage the landscape. Farmers in Unterjoch are mainly engaged in livestock and dairy farming. So if you choose your surroundings for more than just trails and views, you will also find active farming as part of the local landscape.

Trails and Seasonal Activities

The Unterjoch village rally starts at the Unterjoch village car park. Check the materials on site before taking part. The Dwarf Trail starts at the Obergschwend car park in Unterjoch and winds through the snow-covered landscape in winter. Allow about an hour to walk it.

The hiking trails and cycling routes in Unterjoch are considered almost flat and particularly suitable for outings with small children. In winters with reliable snow, cross-country ski trails and winter hiking routes lead from Unterjoch into the neighbouring Tannheimer Tal in Austria. The trails described therefore differ both in character and by season.

The Zinken Loop passes the Obere and Untere Schwandalpe, where the Wertach rises, on its way to Unterjoch and then continues to Jungholz in Tyrol. Check route conditions before setting out. The destinations distinguish the routes: cross-country ski trails and winter hiking routes lead into the Tannheimer Tal, while the Zinken Loop continues from Unterjoch to Jungholz.

Church and Village Traditions

The Church of the Most Holy Trinity in Unterjoch is Baroque in its main structure. Its furnishings include a fresco depicting the Nativity of Christ, a carved group of the Holy Trinity from the circle of Johann Georg Bschorer, High Baroque sculptures, and a Christ in the dungeon from the workshops of Melchior Eberhard in Hindelang. This Christ in the dungeon was probably created around 1750.

Another village tradition is the May Festival, when the maypole is erected in the centre of the village. If you would like to include the festival in your trip, check the event date in advance. The seasonal activities differ clearly in their timing: the Dwarf Trail, cross-country ski trails and winter hiking routes are winter activities; the May Festival has its own event date.

More Cultural Highlights in Bad Hindelang
