Discover Worzeldorf on two wheels, along hiking trails and with views of its historic buildings. The routes described differ considerably in length and course; there is also a listed stone cross, a historic inn and a geological outcrop. You can plan your trip around whether you want to focus primarily on cycling routes, local history or landscape topics.

Cycling and hiking trails around Worzeldorf

One signposted cycling route is 12.3 kilometres long and runs between Nuremberg Central Station and Kornburg via GleiĂźhammer, Langwasser and Worzeldorf. The stated endpoints and intermediate locations give the route a clear course. Another signposted cycling connection forms part of an approximately 300-kilometre circular route through Nuremberg, Hersbruck, Amberg, Regensburg, Beilngries and Neumarkt. Within Nuremberg, its southern leg runs via Kornburg to Worzeldorf. The 12.3 kilometres therefore refer to the route between Central Station and Kornburg, while approximately 300 kilometres refers to the entire circular route.

A hiking route also has a specific connection to the area: the VGN hiking brochure dated September 30, 2022 describes the route “Around Kornburg.” It runs over Worzeldorfer Berg and then to an allotment garden colony and the Steinbrüchlein, with its historic inn and beer garden. If you plan to hike this route, check the trail conditions and what is available at your destination before setting out.

Listed buildings and local history

The Worzeldorfer Lach stone cross is also known as the Ullherkreuz or Dilherrkreuz. It is made of sandstone and probably dates from the late Middle Ages. The listed site is about one kilometre north of the town centre, west of Schwanstetter StraĂźe.

At Worzeldorfer Hauptstraße 15, the listed inn is a two-storey sandstone ashlar building with a gabled façade and a pitched roof; it bears the date 1699. The property also includes farm buildings, a barn built around 1903 and stables. The ensemble thus brings together a precisely identified architectural detail and its associated agricultural buildings.

The historic connection to Pillenreuth Monastery is also part of local history: Worzeldorf and Herpersdorf were monastic villages belonging to the monastery. This offers a perspective distinct from the individual buildings and adds the former connection to the monastery to the history of both places.

Landscape and other cultural topics

The Hohlstein quarry in Worzeldorf is designated as a geological outcrop. Geological outcrops generally serve as archives of Earth’s history and provide insights into the development of an area and its landscape. This adds a geological topic to the architectural and historical perspectives. If you would like to compare different points of interest, you will find specific starting points here: cycling routes, architectural heritage and the history of the landscape.

The wider travel destination of Nuremberg offers additional, distinct cultural attractions. The Toy Museum showcases historical toy treasures and modern toys, including Lego, Barbie, Playmobil and Matchbox, across 1,400 square metres. The City Museum at the Fembo House tells the story of more than 950 years of the city’s history in Nuremberg’s only surviving late-Renaissance merchant’s house, in the heart of the Old Town. One museum brings together historical and modern toys; the other tells the story of the city in a late-Renaissance merchant’s house.

Nuremberg Castle is one of the most important imperial castles of the Middle Ages in Europe. Sights open to visitors there include the Romanesque double chapel with a late Gothic crucifix by Veit Stoß, the 47-metre-deep well shaft of the Deep Well, the Sinwell Tower and an extensive collection of weapons and equipment. The permanent exhibition at the Imperial Castle Museum also covers the castle’s architectural development, its historical significance and the history of medieval weaponry. Check the latest visitor access details before your visit.
