Lauf a.d.Pegnitz combines the history of the town with a vivid glimpse into its industrial past. Wenzelschloss Castle tells the story of its role during the reign of Emperor Charles IV; at the Industrial Museum, mills, technical exhibits and hands-on stations bring different aspects of work to life. A cycle loop through the town on the Pegnitz and its districts, along with the sensory cycle path, adds routes and viewpoints to the cultural attractions. You can tailor your stay to your interests, choosing between the historic centre, technology and cycling.

Wenzelschloss Castle and the market square tell the town’s story

Emperor Charles IV had what is now Wenzelschloss Castle built on the Pegnitz island between 1356 and 1360, on the site of the Imperial Castle that had previously been destroyed. It served as a secondary residence; the emperor mainly used it as a stopping place on his way to his imperial residence in Prague. The castle’s construction and use reveal two distinct aspects of its history: its status as a residence and its practical role as a stop on the journey.

Lauf’s market square was laid out in the 13th century on the “Golden Road” between Nuremberg and Prague. The free-standing Old Town Hall stands in the middle, with two town gates enclosing the square. Shops and restaurants all around invite you to browse and stop for a meal. The castle and market square offer different but complementary perspectives on the town’s history: the imperial stopping place and the historic square on an important route between Nuremberg and Prague.

Industrial history in mills and hands-on exhibits

The Lauf Industrial Museum presents more than 120 years of industrial history across 4,000 m² in 14 listed buildings. The collection includes the Engelhardt hammer mill, one of the last surviving facilities of its kind in Bavaria. The water-powered rye mill is operated during demonstrations and every year on Whit Monday for German Mill Day. The hammer mill at the Industrial Museum is also operated to show visitors how it works. The Reichl grinding mill is likewise still operated to demonstrate how it works.

Hands-on stations make technical concepts accessible through experiments and play. Examples include a steam engine model that is set in motion and trains that visitors power with their own muscles. The specific installations may change over time. If you would rather explore the history on a guided tour, you can book a beer tour of the historic old town in advance; it ends with a beer tasting at the museum. Check availability and details before your trip.

Cycle routes and viewpoints offer another perspective

The 35.6-kilometre Lauf cycle loop is an invitation to explore the town on the Pegnitz and its districts by bike. The town’s cycle network also links to the Industrial Heritage Cycle Route, the Five Rivers Cycle Route and the Paneuropean Cycle Route from Paris to Lauf to Prague. The Industrial Museum is a stop on the Industrial History cycle tour; the Five Rivers Cycle Route passes by the museum. These details offer different starting points for choosing a route: a measured loop through the town and its districts, or named routes connected with industrial heritage.

The sensory cycle path leads to Tauchersreuth. It is Lauf’s highest point and offers a viewpoint. This route adds a landscape perspective to the town’s cultural and technical attractions, without specifying a particular distance or walking time.

Plan visits and excursions

There is also a free audio guide for historic sites and buildings in Lauf, “What did Emperor Charles IV do in Lauf?” With twelve listening stations, it offers historical commentary and is aimed especially at families, children and young people. If you would like to use it, check that the app is available beforehand.

The Heraldic Hall and the exhibitions of the Town of Lauf in the Imperial Hall and the Men’s Room can be visited through the Stadtführer Lauf e.V. and Altstadtfreunde Lauf e.V. As visiting arrangements may change, it is best to check with the organisations listed above in advance.

If you would like to explore the wider Nuremberg Land destination, it offers more than 3,000 kilometres of well-marked hiking trails and well-developed cycle routes of varying difficulty. Nuremberg Land is part of the Franconian Switzerland–Veldenstein Forest Nature Park. These regional details complement the choice of town; they describe the wider destination, not routes within Lauf.
