Wine tours, hiking trails and historic sites lend different character to a stay in Markt Nordheim. You can also take the time of year into account when planning: the spring and autumn markets are regular annual events.
Markets as seasonal landmarks
The spring market in Markt Nordheim takes place every year on the second Sunday after Easter Sunday. The autumn market follows every year on the first Sunday after September 14. Both dates are tied to a clear calendar rule and help you narrow down your travel dates. The markets have different seasonal focuses, while the trails, wine experiences and historic sites offer further themes for your stay.
Nature conservation and trails around Markt Nordheim
The core area of the Nordheim gypsum hills, including the Höllern gypsum cave and the “Sieben Buckel” gypsum hills, has been designated a nature reserve since 1986. It covers 10.0 hectares; its area number is 500.026. The Höllern nature reserve is home to rare animal and plant life. This means that both the protected landscape and its natural features are in focus here.
The hiking trails offer different experiences. The “Kultur-und-Natur” circular hiking trail runs through Markt Nordheim. Route MN 1 is a circular trail through the forests of the Kehrenberg, whose rich wildlife includes butterflies; the flora is also part of the route description. The “Über sieben Buckel musst du geh’n” trail links a hiking path, a nature reserve and vineyards. You can choose between a focus on forest, protected nature or wine country without treating the routes as one and the same.
A signposted hiking trail through extensive mixed forest leads to Hohenlandsberg Castle ruins. There, remains of vaulted structures evoke earlier times. The nature experience grounds in Markt Nordheim feature a barefoot path, a fire pit, a lake and a viewing hill.
Wine, food and local history
There are several ways to discover wine in Markt Nordheim: vineyard tours are offered with tastings. Guided experiences include wine tastings in the wine village or through the history-rich countryside. A guided culinary hike through Markt Nordheim crosses bridges and pauses at the Mühlenbrunnen for a glass of wine or water. The Häckerwirtschaften offer wine tastings accompanied by a hearty snack. The options therefore differ in whether the focus is on a guided tour, a hike, or combining a wine tasting with food.
There is also a named option for a cycling tour: the “Bocksbeuteltour” valley floodplain cycling path is a leisurely route through the villages of the WeinWanderWelt. Historic traces in Markt Nordheim include St. George’s Church. It dates from the 14th century and contains an epitaph of the von Seinsheim family. Tours through the history-rich countryside and a visit to the church add a historical dimension to the themes of wine and nature, without requiring a single set walking tour.
Culture in the associated municipality
The associated municipality offers further cultural attractions. The Osing land lottery takes place only once every ten years. In the lottery held from September 20 to 22, 2024, 274 hectares of land were allocated among 213 rights holders. The Osing land lottery has also been included in the Federal Republic of Germany’s inventory of intangible UNESCO cultural heritage. In the village of Ulsenheim, the “Natur und Wengert” meditation trail runs through the vineyards and includes the “Kleine Welten der Entfaltung” educational and experience trail. Public concerts have been held at Seehaus Castle since 2001. The Osingmuseum Herbolzheim provides information about the history, flora and fauna of the Osing cultural monument. These destinations broaden the view of culture and landscape within the associated municipality, but remain distinct from the attractions in the village of Markt Nordheim itself.
