Seven marked hiking routes, historic churches and a themed cycling trail offer different ways to explore Emskirchen. If you are planning a trip, you can focus on outdoor activity, architectural history or both. The specific route details help you compare the trails by length.

Hiking among fields, forests and ponds

The seven signposted municipal hiking trails, E1 to E7, range from 8 to 18 kilometres. Longer routes have marked shortcuts. The trails pass through fields, forests and meadows, by pond landscapes and smaller sights. This brings open countryside and individual places to discover together. Before setting out, check the trail markers and published route details so your plans suit the route you have chosen.

A 13-kilometre VGN hike also runs from Emskirchen to Markt Erlbach. Its length falls within the 8-to-18-kilometre range of the seven signposted routes. Check the route details before setting out on this hike, too.

Churches, a castle and postal history

The Evangelical Lutheran St Kilian’s Church was first mentioned in a document in 1156; its oldest part is the Late Romanesque tower, dating from the second quarter of the 13th century. The first documentary mention and the oldest surviving part provide two different reference points for its architectural history.

Huguenots built the Church of the Resurrection in 1705/06 as a square hall with pointed-arch windows. Its date, floor plan and windows give it a different architectural character from the Late Romanesque tower of St Kilian’s Church.

The old post station was located in the former Gasthof Goldener Hirsch. From 1623 onwards, mail was sorted and horses changed there. Alongside church architecture, the town’s former postal history is another subject to explore.

The Altschauerberg castle ruins are the remains of a hilltop castle dating from the 14th century. They are located in the forest above Altschauerberg, a district of Emskirchen, and add a medieval castle to the town’s historic landmarks.

By the water and on two wheels

The Middle Aurach Fish Nature Trail runs along the Aurach between the old prison and the Gmäs Bridge. Six information panels are placed along the route. The trail offers a distinct riverside attraction alongside the hiking trails and historic buildings.

For a cycling trip, the Tour of Energy offers a theme of its own: its circular route starts in Emskirchen and shows how renewable energy has been produced today and in past centuries. Check the route details before setting out.

Emskirchen lies on the edge of Steigerwald Nature Park, in a landscape of gentle hills, lush meadows and forests. The surrounding area also features mills, quiet hamlets and villages, historic farmhouses and town houses, sights and museums. This variety provides a natural and cultural backdrop for the different kinds of stay.
