Marktbergel lies at the foot of Petersberg, directly on the B 13 between Ansbach and Würzburg and between Rothenburg and Bad Windsheim. The treeless, 504-metre-high Petersberg is the town’s striking landmark: from its summit, the view stretches across the northern plain.

Petersberg and guided walks

Today, Petersberg is an attractive destination for an excursion. Wine was once grown on the hill. The landscape and its former use come together in one place: Petersberg offers views across the northern plain and also has a history of winegrowing.

In Marktbergel, two types of guided walks can be arranged by prior booking: along the adventure trail on Petersberg or as a village walk exploring Marktbergel’s history. The two options have different focuses. The first centres on Petersberg, while the second explores the town’s history. If you would like to include a guided walk in your stay, remember to book in advance.

The Aisch Spring and the MUNA Museum

The source of the Aisch lies within the municipality of Marktbergel, right on the boundary with the municipality of Burgbernheim. It also marks the beginning of the AischgrĂĽnder carp region, a Franconian speciality. In Marktbergel, a specific geographical landmark and the name of a regional dish thus come together.

The MUNA Museum Marktbergel makes the history of the former “Lufthauptmunitionsanstalt Oberdachstetten” (MUNA) accessible to the public. It also covers the military history of the surrounding municipalities in the Frankenhöhe. Its scope therefore ranges from the history of the MUNA to the military history of the municipalities in its vicinity.

Within the wider Neustadt A.D.Aisch-Bad Windsheim destination

The district of Neustadt A.D.Aisch-Bad Windsheim is nestled between the Steigerwald and Frankenhöhe nature parks and is particularly easy to explore on foot or by bike. The district-wide cycling network offers themed routes for different abilities, from leisurely rides to more challenging cycling. Another option is the almost 100-kilometre long-distance cycle route “vom Main zur Zenn”: it runs through the district and connects Kitzingen with Fürth. The themed routes and long-distance trail offer cycling options on different scales throughout the region.

The museums across the wider destination also each have their own focus. A walk through the Franconian Open-Air Museum in Bad Windsheim is considered a journey through 700 years of everyday Franconian history. The Bauhofstadel there was built in 1441–1444; its late-medieval roof structure spans an interior of around 360 square metres without supports. The Aischgründer Carp Museum in Neustadt an der Aisch explores the more than 1,250-year tradition of carp farming across ten rooms.

In Neustadt an der Aisch, Aischgründer mirror carp is one of the local specialities. It is served from September to April, including crispy fried or blue in broth. Each year, the Aischgründer Karpfenschmeckerwochen (Carp Tasting Weeks) take place at selected restaurants across the district from 1 September to 1 November. Check which establishments are currently participating before your trip. The district’s Wildbretwochen (Game Meat Weeks) are held every November and offer game meat prepared in a variety of ways; it is also advisable to check the programme for the current dates.
