Breitenbrunn lies in Altmühltal Nature Park and is a state-recognized resort. Small streams wind through valleys protected as biotopes; steep, nutrient-poor grassland slopes with unique biodiversity rise to a finely structured plateau of the Franconian Jura. Nature is also reflected in named trails and educational paths, while churches, preserved buildings and festivals give the town its own cultural focus.

Hiking Trails and Nature

The Breitenbrunn market town’s hiking trail network is organized around the “Rose” premium trail. The Rose Trail passes rose blossoms and fragrances and offers botanical information about the plants. The blossoms and fragrances lend the trail a sensory touch, while the botanical information adds to it with insights into the plant world. A forest nature trail puts the focus on the forest.

The Heutal Trail and Water Buffalo Trail are among the nature trails in the municipality of Breitenbrunn. The Bucher Berg Nature and Culture Trail leads to impressive settlements from the Stone and Bronze Ages. At Bucher Berg in the municipality, the Wild Rose Garden provides a habitat for 25 rare native rose species, as well as many endangered plant and animal species. Rare animal and plant species have settled along an idyllic stream at Erbmühle in the municipality of Breitenbrunn.

Churches, Architectural History and Breitenegg Castle

The pilgrimage church of St. Sebastian was built in 1386 and consecrated in 1401. It has an octagonal central structure and two towers with distinctive onion domes. Construction and consecration were 15 years apart; the dates mark two stages in its architectural history. The cemetery church is dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows; its ceiling paintings document the “belief in the souls of the poor.”

At the end of the 16th century, Breitenbrunn had five gates; today, only the castle gate remains. Only the ruins of the former Breitenegg Castle remain above Breitenbrunn. Its history dates back to the 13th century. The well-preserved Tilly banner can also still be admired in Breitenbrunn today.

Recurring Annual Festivals

Two recurring events take place in different seasons and may influence when you choose to visit. The holy patron against the plague is celebrated each year during the week around January 20; every day, worshippers make a pilgrimage to the Church of St. Sebastian on Heiligen Hügel for a service. Service schedules may vary. If you plan to attend, check the times in advance.

The Tilly Festival takes place each year on the second weekend in September, with a historical procession and medieval festivities. Check the dates for the year in question if you are planning your trip around the festival. The two events are far apart in the calendar: the religious celebration is the focus in January, while the procession and medieval festivities take place in September.

Recreation and Camping

Holiday activities in Breitenbrunn include a family-friendly natural swimming pool and a mini-golf course. A Kneipp pool offers a chance to cool hot feet, and there is also a scenic campground. If you plan to stay overnight at the campground, check availability and operating details in advance. Before your visit, you can check whether the natural swimming pool, mini-golf course and Kneipp pool will be open during your trip.
