Lohhof’s railway station history dates back to 1858; at Flachsfeld, a QR code opens up a virtual learning site about the former flax retting works. Together with the Path of Remembrance, these offer different ways to explore local history and the history of remembrance. The wider destination of Unterschleißheim offers further cultural and active pursuits.

Railway connections and getting here

Lohhof got a railway station in 1858 on the Munich–Landshut railway line. In 1972, Lohhof station was incorporated into the S-Bahn network. The S1 is also important for getting around the wider destination of Unterschleißheim: it serves the Lohhof and Unterschleißheim stops. From there, Munich Airport, Marienplatz and the city of Freising are reachable in about 20 minutes. The S1 also goes directly to Feldmoching, where you can connect to the U2, as well as to Munich Central Station and Ostbahnhof. Check the current timetable and connections before you travel.

Flachsfeld: a learning site with a digital reconstruction

The Virtual Learning Site at Flachsfeld is at the corner of Carl-von-Linde-Straße and Johann-Kotschwara-Straße. The former Lohhof flax retting works are within sight. A stele with a QR code provides access to a virtual reconstruction of the flax retting works, as well as historical information and photos. This site therefore focuses on both the former flax retting works and their digital representation. Anyone interested in local history will find a specific starting point here for connecting the historical information with the named location.

The 500-metre-long Path of Remembrance connects the monument with the learning site. It is a permanent part of the memorial site. The monument and learning site can thus be explored together via a short, clearly signposted route; the route itself offers another way to engage with the site.

Memorial site in the wider destination of Unterschleißheim

In the wider destination of Unterschleißheim, a monument next to the Unterschleißheim Vocational and Technical College commemorates the fate of the forced labourers. It consists of four flax fields and seven portrait steles. The Path of Remembrance connects the monument with the learning site. The combination of the monument, flax fields and portraits gives the site a specific historical focus; the QR-code-enabled reconstruction at the learning site complements it with historical information and photos.

The wider destination of Unterschleißheim also offers other cultural attractions. The Town Museum has around 200 m² of exhibition space dedicated to history and art. St Ulrich’s Old Church, together with the Gasthof „Alter Wirt“ to its north, still forms the centre of what was once the farming village of Unterschleißheim. The „Valentinsquelle“ is located in Valentinspark on the southern edge of town and bubbles up from a depth of almost 2,000 metres. Following a medical and balneological assessment, it was officially recognised as a healing spring in 2016. These sites offer different points of interest: museum exhibits, a historic town centre and the spring described above.
