Oberwarngau offers several ways to combine architectural history with outdoor activities: St. John the Baptist on Kirchbichl, the Church of All Saints and a mountain hike to Taubenberg. Other options include a cycling tour through the municipality of Warngau and further destinations in the wider Warngau travel destination. The cultural attractions and activities differ in subject and setting, so you can tailor your stay to your own interests.

Churches and History in Oberwarngau

The Church of St. John the Baptist stands on Kirchbichl in Oberwarngau. Its present form was created around 1500 as a Late Gothic building of tuff ashlar. The portal and the star vault inside date from this period; three high altar figures from the first half of the 16th century have also been preserved. The star vault and the figures offer different ways to explore the design of the church interior and its furnishings.

The large Lenten veil is another special feature of St. John the Baptist. It measures 435 Ă— 280 centimetres and is used for its original liturgical purpose. Its seasonal display may vary. If you would like to see the veil during your visit, it is best to check in advance whether it will be on display at that time.

The Church of All Saints stands on the old country road that once connected Oberwarngau with Tegernsee Abbey. Its role as a pilgrimage church is documented from the late 17th century. Between 1739 and 1754, it acquired its final Baroque form. Several historical layers are therefore reflected in the church: its earlier connection to the abbey, its documented pilgrimage tradition and its later Baroque design.

The annual Warngau Leonhardi pilgrimage also leads to the Church of All Saints. It takes place on the fourth Sunday in October. The programme includes a church service and the blessing of teams of horses and riders. If you would like to plan your trip around the pilgrimage, check the date for the relevant year.

Archaeological finds on the so-called Kaiserbichl in Oberwarngau show that Warngau’s roots go back at least to the 6th century AD. This historical connection adds a much earlier layer to the more recent architectural and church histories.

On Foot, by Bike and at the Observation Tower

A mountain hike up Taubenberg begins in the centre of Oberwarngau. The key to the historic observation tower on Taubenberg is available from the nearby Berggasthof Taubenberg for a deposit. As access arrangements may change, it is advisable to check the key collection arrangements before your visit.

An approximately half-hour cycling tour in the municipality of Warngau starts at the Church of All Saints. It passes over Taubenberg and through Hinterberg, by the “Ludwiger” farm; along the way, there are views of meadows and hills. Its approximate duration and route make this tour a separate option from the mountain hike. Scenic flights with experienced pilots are also available at the airfield in Oberwarngau.

The municipal bathing pond is on the edge of Osterwarngau. In the wider Warngau travel destination, the bathing pond was artificially created; at its deepest point it is 2.20 metres deep and is fed by natural spring water from Taubenberg. If you plan to swim, take the local conditions and current seasonal situation into account.

Warngau in the Wider Area

The wider Warngau travel destination also offers historic architecture beyond Oberwarngau. The present-day parish church of St. Margaret in Wall was built in the early 16th century and is a Late Gothic tuff building in its basic structure. St. Michael’s Chapel in Hinterberg was consecrated in 1758. The pilgrimage chapel of Nüchternbrunn is situated in the forest and originated around 1710 as a wooden hermitage. These three churches and chapels are in the wider Warngau travel destination, outside Oberwarngau.

For cross-country skiing, the municipality of Warngau has a 7.5-kilometre trail in Wall, with access at the sports complex, and a 5-kilometre trail in Warngau, with access at the sports ground or Brandweg. The different trail lengths and access points help you choose between the two options; snow conditions are seasonal and should be checked before you go cross-country skiing.

There is a BRB railway station in the municipality of Warngau on the Munich–Tegernsee–Lenggries line. Bus services connect Warngau with Miesbach, Wall, Holzkirchen, Bad Tölz and Tegernsee. When planning your journey by public transport, it is advisable to check departure times and service frequency separately. The railway station and bus services are part of the wider Warngau travel destination, not Oberwarngau.
