The Holzkirchen Geo-trail connects 24 stops on two circular routes, covering topics related to the local landscape. Other highlights include culture at the Oberbräu, cycling routes and more ways to get active—so you can choose different focuses for your stay.
Geo-trail and landscape
The northern route is 16 kilometres long and starts and ends at Holzkirchen railway station. The southern route is 19 kilometres long; its starting and finishing point is the Herdergarten. The two circular routes therefore differ both in length and in where they begin and end. When choosing, you can weigh up these specific landmarks and the respective distances.
Along the Geo-trail, information boards explain glacial geomorphological features in the Holzkirchen area: retreat stages of the terminal moraines, former meltwater channels and the formation of the Teufelsgraben gorge. If you are interested in how the landscape was formed, this trail offers a way to explore the subject while enjoying nature.
Culture at the Oberbräu
KULTUR im Oberbräu brings together theatre, literature and cabaret, as well as music, concerts, cinema, exhibitions, food and drink, and other offerings. Its programme ranges from stage and music events to film and visual arts. There are also opportunities to take part: the rehearsal room offers a wide variety of courses for all ages.
The cultural centre has several different spaces: FoolsKino has 73 comfortable seats and screens a selection of award-winning films. FoolsTheater provides event space for up to 130 spectators. The foyer is open to artists from the region for exhibitions. Each area gives the cultural programme its own setting.
Cycling, walks and swimming
Around Holzkirchen, cycling routes lead from the lively market square out into the surrounding countryside in less than five minutes. The visitor offerings also include a cycling tour to Hackensee. If you prefer to explore on foot, you can plan a hike along the Teufelsgraben or a short walk along Steindlweg. This gives you a choice of different ways to get active, from cycling and hiking to a short walk in town.
BATUSA Holzkirchen has a swimming pool that is 12.5 metres wide and 25 metres long, a large water slide, a heated outdoor pool and a children’s paddling pool. In summer, a large sunbathing lawn is also available. If you are planning a visit to the swimming pool, check the current opening hours and the availability of seasonal offerings in advance.
Colourful markets are held in Holzkirchen several times a year. If a market is important to your stay, it is worth checking the dates before you travel.
Holzkirchen as a base
From Holzkirchen, central Munich can be reached by S-Bahn or Bayerische Oberlandbahn train in about 30 minutes. If Munich is also part of your travel plans, this approximate rail journey time is a useful factor when choosing where to stay.
