Grünenbach combines regional cheese-making traditions with cultural attractions and routes for cycling and pilgrimage. For planning, it helps to distinguish clearly: some attractions are right in town, while the Eistobel is nearby. This lets you arrange local cultural attractions and nature experiences according to your interests.
Cheese-making traditions and the dairy
At the Käsbaur cheese shop in Grünenbach, you can try specialities made from organic Allgäu hay milk. The Käsbaur Grünenbach dairy is one of the fourteen selected dairies visited by the Allgäu Cheese Route. These offer two different perspectives: tasting focuses on the specialities, while the cheese route highlights the dairy’s role on a regional route.
The Käsbaur dairy was originally founded in 1886 by the Baldauf brothers and was taken over by Käsbaur GmbH & Co. KG in December 2020. It processes organic hay milk into hard and semi-hard cheese, as well as butter, quark, milk and cream. Tours are available for groups of ten or more by prior arrangement. The story from its founding to its takeover adds the dairy’s history to the picture of its products.
Eistobel nearby
The Eistobel nature reserve is a particularly worthwhile excursion destination near Grünenbach. It is three and a half kilometres long. Four different circular hiking trails allow you to explore it at your own pace; conditions may vary seasonally. Check your chosen route before setting out. The Eistobel information pavilion is also the main entrance to the Eistobel and is located right by the Argentobel Bridge between Maierhöfen and Grünenbach. Its location by the bridge gives you a clear landmark for your excursion.
Cycling and pilgrimage
The Lake Constance–Königssee cycle route passes through Grünenbach. For a different kind of trip, the Jakobweg in Grünenbach can be used as a pilgrimage route. You can choose your route to suit your planned activity: cycling on the Lake Constance–Königssee cycle route or pilgrimage on the Jakobweg. Both options give Grünenbach a clear connection to different ways of travelling.
Cultural attractions and summer programme
The Freigericht monument on the Buch and the cultural and Thing site are worthwhile destinations right in Grünenbach. Hohenegg Castle ruins offer visitors an insight into the history of the Allgäu. The parish churches of St. Ottmar and St. Elisabeth are also among Grünenbach’s attractions. This gives you a choice of places right in town as well as a glimpse into the history of the Allgäu.
Every summer, the Grünenbach Tourism Association stages several performances of a German fairy tale on an outdoor forest stage. The event appeals to children and adults. If you would like to include a performance in your stay, plan your visit around the specific performance dates.
Laubenberg-Stüble offers mini golf, darts and table football for the whole family. This extends the choice beyond nature and cultural attractions to shared leisure activities. Check the current opening hours before planning your visit.
