At the western edge of Epfenhausen, the Parish Church of the Assumption of Mary stands on Kirchberg. From there, the view stretches across the entire village; a walk through the fields leads to Walburga Chapel, farther to the west. The church, views, and walk through the fields form a clear focus for choosing where to stay.

Baroque furnishings and Gothic traces

The Parish Church of the Assumption of Mary combines Baroque interior furnishings with surviving Gothic elements. These include a late Baroque high altar and the altarpiece of the Assumption of Mary, created in 1738. The furnishings are complemented by carved oak choir stalls. Fragments of Gothic frescoes have also survived, and the sacristy contains remnants of a Gothic pointed-arch vault. Baroque design and Gothic features thus stand side by side in one building.

Field path and views at Walburga Chapel

A walk leads from the church through the fields to Walburga Chapel, farther to the west. It is also called the Plague Chapel and stands on slightly elevated ground near Kaufering/Epfenhausen. From there, you can enjoy a beautiful view of the countryside and the mountains. The two viewpoints offer different perspectives: from Kirchberg, you can see across the entire village; at the chapel, the view reaches across the countryside and mountains.

Hiking, pilgrimage, and cycling

A star pilgrimage to Walburga Chapel took place on May 28, 2025, at 6 p.m. The parish church in Epfenhausen was one of three starting points; from there, participants walked through the fields to the chapel.

Another example of exploring the surrounding area by bike is a guided tour from Landsberg am Lech to Walleshausen and back. On September 10, 2023, it followed cycle paths and low-traffic roads through Epfenhausen, Geretshausen, and Walleshausen. The two examples differ in route type: the pilgrimage went on foot from the church through the fields to the chapel, while the guided bike tour passed through several villages. Both events took place in the past.

Public transport on weekdays

A public transport service connects Epfenhausen, Untermühlhausen, and Landsberg from Monday to Friday. If you plan to use it for your journey, check the current timetable before setting out and plan according to your travel date.

Religious history in the wider destination of Penzing

In the wider destination of Penzing, Frauenkapelle, also known as Feldkapelle, stands at the southern edge of the village. It was built and endowed in 1722 by Simon Erhart, a priest in Bergen, and Johann Wiedemann, a wheelwright from Penzing. In 1806, lightning struck the field chapel; it could not be rebuilt due to a lack of funds. A community bulletin from December 2022 states that the only surviving part is the bell, inscribed “Johanns Windaman von Penzing 1723.”

The Catholic Parish Church of St. Martin in Penzing also has its own building history: its core dates from the 15th century; around 1719, it was extended and given a Baroque makeover. Together, the buildings in Penzing illustrate different developments: a church with a medieval core that was later given a Baroque makeover, and an endowed chapel that was not rebuilt after being struck by lightning.
