Possenhofen is best explored through two themes: the history of Empress Elisabeth and the trails along Lake Starnberg. The Empress Elisabeth Museum is housed in the former royal railway station in Possenhofen, now the Possenhofen station on the S6 suburban railway, at the east exit. From here, the Elisabeth Trail links several stops, combining Sisi’s story with a walk.

Empress Elisabeth and the Museum

Possenhofen Castle is associated with Elisabeth’s childhood and youth. The future Empress of Austria spent carefree summer months there with her family. The museum offers a look at various stages in the lives of Empress Elisabeth and her family: on display are images, printed materials, memorabilia, literature and historical documents. Exhibits on King Ludwig II, Lake Starnberg and the history of the railway station round out the topics.

The museum offers a tour in six languages, which you can follow using your own smartphone and headphones. There is also an audio guide for children and a German-language audio/video guide for deaf and hard-of-hearing visitors. This lets you tailor your museum visit to different interests, from family history to the story of the railway station.

The Elisabeth Trail and Audio Walks

The cultural and historical Elisabeth Trail leads from the museum to Possenhofen Castle in about a 10-minute walk, and to the crossing to Rose Island in about a 30-minute walk. In Feldafing, the route follows the Empress Elisabeth Trail and Wolf’s Gorge, with its nature trail, back to Possenhofen station; a shorter option leads to Feldafing station. These walking times provide two specific points of reference along the route, while the return options offer a choice of endpoints.

The free audio walks “Empress Elisabeth, ‘Sisi’ – Feldafing and Possenhofen” explore the theme through nine stops in both towns. They tell the story of Elisabeth’s life, from her childhood on Lake Starnberg to her tragic death. The listening points are accessible via QR code, can be combined freely and are suitable for all age groups. If you would rather explore with a group, you can plan the guided tour “In Possenhofen in Sisi’s Footsteps”: it begins and ends at Possenhofen station, by the Sisi statue, and covers 2.8 kilometres on foot. Check the latest dates and tour details in advance.

Swimming Spot and Boat Trips on the Lake

Possenhofen and Niederpöcking border Lake Starnberg and are connected by the lake’s predominantly tourist-oriented scheduled boat services. If you would like to include a crossing or a boat trip, check the timetables before making plans; services and times at individual landing stages may change. The “Paradies” bathing area is a large swimming spot on the former grounds of Possenhofen Castle and offers a distinct attraction alongside the cultural and historical trails.

More to Explore in the Wider Destination of Pöcking

Pöcking also offers nature and architecture attractions that differ from the stops in Possenhofen. Maisinger See is Bavaria’s oldest nature reserve and has been protected since 1941. It provides a habitat for rare bird and plant species; reeds and extensive areas of moorland define the landscape. Maisinger Moor is a protected breeding ground for rare bird species.

The Maisinger circular trail runs between Pöcking and Maising, past the Pöckinger Alm and along the Maisinger Bach to the centre of Maising. A footpath along the edge of the forest leads back to Pöcking. The Villenweg offers a different perspective: it starts at the municipal library and passes villas and country houses. Some of the old buildings have been preserved almost in their original condition and illustrate 19th-century architecture.

When searching for a holiday apartment in Possenhofen, you can first consider whether you want your stay to focus on the museum and Elisabeth Trail, the swimming spot and lake, or additional nature and architecture attractions in the wider destination of Pöcking. If you are planning a guided tour or boat trip, it is worth checking the relevant dates and timetables before setting your itinerary.
