At just under 80 km², Lake Chiemsee is the largest lake located entirely within the Free State of Bavaria. Its special character can be seen from two perspectives: the entire lake is designated as a bird sanctuary, while Herreninsel and Fraueninsel each tell their own stories of palaces, monasteries and art.

Nature and birdlife

The “Chiemseegebiet mit Alz” bird sanctuary covers the whole of Lake Chiemsee. The lake is one of the largest breeding, resting and wintering grounds for waterbirds in southern Germany; up to 40,000 birds are found in the area. These three functions represent different stages in the bird year: breeding, resting and wintering. Birdlife thus shapes the way visitors see Lake Chiemsee as a whole, rather than just a single stretch of shore. If you are especially interested in nature, this ecological significance offers a distinct way to experience the destination.

Islands steeped in monastic, artistic and palace history

Herreninsel is the largest island in Lake Chiemsee. Since summer 2025, Herrenchiemsee Palace has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “The Palaces of King Ludwig II of Bavaria: Neuschwanstein, Linderhof, Schachen and Herrenchiemsee”. The former Augustinian Canons’ Monastery is also located by the landing stage on Herreninsel, with a constitutional museum, historic halls and the Chiemsee Painters Gallery. The history of the palace sits alongside places devoted to the constitution and painting.

On Fraueninsel, a long monastic history is connected with a community that is still active today: Frauenwörth Abbey was founded in the eighth century and is still home to Benedictine nuns. Frauenchiemsee is one of Europe’s oldest artists’ colonies; its history is associated with the year 1828. In the adjoining Vicarage of the Carolingian Gate Hall, the Inselgalerie Gailer holds exhibitions about the Chiemsee painters every year during the summer months. Local life also has a distinctive character: six families still make their living from fishing on Fraueninsel, and traditional pottery workshops are part of the island’s character.

Water sports and the route around the lake

Lake Chiemsee has sailing schools, boat rentals and regattas. Stand-up paddleboarding is also possible, with numerous rental stations and tours along the shore. Visitors can rent electric boats, while private motorboats are subject to strict restrictions. These are different offerings and rules: the restrictions apply to private motorboats. Before your trip, check specific providers, dates and availability; for stand-up paddleboarding, you should also check the rules for launching.

The Chiemsee Cycle Path offers a different perspective: it is a circular route of about 60 kilometres around the lake. On Fraueninsel, the circular path is suitable for wheelchair users; check this information again before your trip. The focus is therefore on two very different routes: the cycle loop around Lake Chiemsee and the circular path on the island, which is designated as suitable for wheelchair users.

Choose your own focus

When looking for a holiday apartment, your preferred way to travel can help you decide: island culture, birdlife, water sports or a cycle tour around the lake each offer a different focus. Think about which of these themes matters most to you, and check the latest information from specific providers regarding dates and accessibility.
