Sommerach is a wine-growing town on the Volkacher Mainschleife. Two distinctive themes go hand in hand when planning a visit: the historic town fortifications and the wine experiences. There are also guided tours through the historic wine town, as well as routes in the town and the surrounding area. You can tailor your stay to your interests in local history, tastings or outdoor activities.

Gates and Town Fortifications

The well-preserved village wall dates from the 15th and 16th centuries. With its defensive towers and gates, it surrounds the town center. The Schwarzacher Gate is part of these fortifications: the gatehouse was completed in 1487 and is the tallest structure in Sommerach’s town fortifications. The wall, towers and gates give the town’s history a tangible architectural presence. The gate’s completion year provides a precise date, while the village wall is associated with two centuries.

The Schwarzacher Gate houses a gallery by artist Petra Markert. It showcases contemporary art made from glass and other materials. This historic gatehouse is also a venue for art. If you would like to visit the gallery or attend an art event, check the latest information beforehand.

Wine Tastings and Wine Experiences

Sommerach’s wine experiences offer a variety of options. Weingut Stephan Strobel offers guided wine tastings, wine walks and cellar tours. At Weingut Schlereth, the “Wine & Walk” vineyard tour takes you through the Sommerach vineyards. Both experiences focus on wine, but differ in format: at Strobel, you can choose between a wine tasting, a walk and a cellar tour, while “Wine & Walk” is described as a tour through the vineyards.

The InfoVinothek Sommerach is located in the historic school and community building in the town center. It offers a varied selection of wines from the wine-growing community for tasting and purchase. Another way to combine wine with a tour is the “Sommerach Wine Stroll”: it takes you through the Weinreich, the wine school and the historic wine cellar of WINZER SOMMERACH. The wine stroll is seasonal; check current dates and booking requirements before planning. Details of the wineries’ offerings may also change.

Tours and Routes

“Discover Sommerach” is a walking tour through the historic wine town. The tour includes visits to two wineries and a tasting of three wines. It combines a town tour with a clearly defined wine program. By contrast, “Wine & Walk” is specifically a tour through the vineyards. When choosing between the formats, you can consider whether you would prefer to explore the historic wine town with a wine tasting or focus on walking through the vineyards. Tour details may change; check the current offering in advance.

Local recreational options in the town and surrounding area include hiking trails and a grape-variety educational trail. These complement the guided wine experiences with additional ways to explore Sommerach and its wine heritage on foot.

A Look at Kitzingen

As additional regional context, the wider destination of Kitzingen has its own historic buildings. The Falterturm in Kitzingen, formerly called the “Falltorturm,” was built between 1469 and 1496 as a watchtower on the outer town wall. The Old Main Bridge in Kitzingen, also known as the “Pippinsbrücke,” has medieval origins and was first mentioned in a document in 1300. These examples belong to Kitzingen’s history; in Sommerach itself, the village wall, defensive towers and gates define the town center.
