Explore Rödelsee through wine, walking trails and history. The digital wayside shrine trail “Wine and Truth” connects wine and religion, while the Jewish Cemetery, Crailsheim Castle and Elfleinshäusla each offer a different historical perspective. For planning, the trail length, the Saturday rule at the cemetery and the seasonal visiting hours at Elfleinshäusla are particularly relevant.

Wine and Trails Around Rödelsee

The digital wayside shrine trail “Wine and Truth” has nine stops and is about three kilometers long. It explores the special connection between wine and religion in and around Rödelsee. Its length gives you a clear basis for planning your tour, while the stops bring the two themes together. The Rödelsee Dream Trail is also designated as a hiking trail.

The 474-meter-high Schwanberg lies close to Rödelsee. Its woodland and vine-covered slopes invite you to stroll and hike. Alongside the themed wayside shrine trail, you can therefore choose to focus on the landscape and outdoor activity.

Jewish Heritage and Local History

The Rödelsee Jewish District Cemetery was first mentioned in 1432. Jews from more than 20 communities were buried there until 1942. The cemetery covers just under 19,000 square meters and, with its former 5,500 graves, is one of the largest surviving Jewish cemeteries in Germany. About 2,500 gravestones remain; their inscriptions can provide information about the people buried there.

There is one firm restriction on visits: because of the Jewish Sabbath, the cemetery may not be entered on Saturdays, and guided tours are therefore not available that day either. Bear this in mind when choosing a date if you would like to include the site in your plans.

Another chapter in local history leads to Crailsheim Castle. Built in 1614 with a volute gable, it subsequently became the residence of the Rödelsee branch of the von Crailsheim family. Elfleinshäusla, meanwhile, is a faithfully restored, typical Franconian home, shop and vintner’s house. Its forge is the central feature.

At Elfleinshäusla, museum tours and, where available, blacksmith demonstrations can be arranged for groups of up to 20 people. The group-size limit and advance booking are part of planning a visit; a blacksmith demonstration is not necessarily included in every tour.

Winegrowing, Tastings and Festivals

The “Küchenmeister” and “Schwanleite” vineyards offer especially favorable growing conditions for grapes thanks to a distinctive microclimate. “terroir f Silvaner” can be reserved through the municipality for wine tastings. The Vinfothek Schloss Crailsheim combines a tourist information center with a wine shop, adding another specific place to visit for wine-related experiences.

The Rödelsee Wine Festival is held regularly on the first weekend in July. Check the exact date for your travel year before planning your trip around it. This lets you consider the festival as a possible highlight without assuming that the dates are the same every year.

Plan Visiting Hours and Your Journey

Elfleinshäusla has seasonal opening hours: from May to October, it is open Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 2 to 6 p.m.; visits are also possible by appointment. Check the hours before you go. If you are planning a group tour or a possible blacksmith demonstration, also allow for the advance booking requirement and the limit of 20 people.

The nearest train station is in Iphofen, about three kilometers from Rödelsee. Check train services for your travel date. This lets you factor in the station’s location when planning your journey without assuming a particular connection or onward route.

Historic Buildings in the Wider Kitzingen Destination

The wider Kitzingen destination also has its own historical perspective. The Old Main Bridge in Kitzingen, also known as “Pippinsbrücke,” has medieval origins and was first documented in 1300. The Falterturm, formerly called “Falltorturm,” was built between 1469 and 1496 as a watchtower on the outer town wall. These buildings add Kitzingen’s own architectural and historical dates to the picture of Rödelsee’s local history.
