Castell offers a variety of ways to explore wine, landscape and history. A guided Silvaner experience combines a walk through named vineyard sites with a tasting. The C5 hiking trail passes historic and scenic points of interest, while the Museum Barn focuses on the town’s winegrowing heritage. The experiences differ in character: some centre on the vineyard sites and Silvaner, while others focus on trails, blossoms or local history.

Silvaner and grape hyacinths

The guided Silvaner walk takes you to Castell’s Hohnart, Schlossberg and Kirchberg vineyard sites. Three Silvaner wines are tasted in the vineyard. Visits can be arranged by appointment. The experience combines a walk through the named sites with a tasting, making it a clear choice for anyone who wants to enjoy both together.

Another guided experience is the spring walk “A riot of colour in the vineyard”. It follows the edge of Castell’s Schlossberg and draws attention to Castell’s rare, protected wild grape hyacinths. Depending on the weather, the hyacinths bloom between 12 and 28 April; the timing varies from year to year. This guided walk can also be arranged by appointment. The two experiences differ mainly in their focus: Silvaner and wine tasting in one, spring flowers in the other.

C5 hiking trail: landscape and traces of the past

The C5 Castell hiking trail passes the Court Linden, the grape hyacinths, the castle tower ruins and the Celtic rampart. Further along the trail, there are views across the Main Valley and, in good weather, as far as the Rhön. The route thus brings together named historic sites and scenic views. The view as far as the Rhön is explicitly dependent on good weather. The trail offers a different perspective on Castell from the guided experiences: its character is shaped by the points of interest along the route and the views.

Castle Park and Museum Barn

Castell Castle Park was laid out between 1686 and 1690, at the same time as the castle, during the early Baroque period. Its origins place it in the same period as the castle. Together with the C5 trail’s points of interest, it offers another way to explore Castell’s history without taking a guided tour.

The Castell Museum Barn documents winegrowing in Castell from earlier times to the modern era. Panels with images and text, along with numerous exhibits, present the subject. Tools used by a cabinetmaker around 1900 are also on display. The museum visit adds a historical perspective to the vineyard sites and wine tasting: while the guided walk connects winegrowing with a walk through the sites and a tasting, the Museum Barn shows its development through exhibition panels and objects.

Further cultural topics in the wider Kitzingen destination

The wider Kitzingen destination includes its own historic buildings. The Falterturm in Kitzingen, formerly called the “Falltorturm”, was built between 1469 and 1496 as a watchtower on the outer city wall. The Old Main Bridge in Kitzingen, also known as “Pippinsbrücke”, dates back to the Middle Ages and was first mentioned in a document in 1300. These are Kitzingen attractions; in Castell itself, the places described here focus on winegrowing, trails, the castle park and the Museum Barn.

When planning your visit, you can choose from the different experiences: a tasting on a guided walk or the spring walk can be arranged by appointment. The grape hyacinths’ weather-dependent flowering period is another factor to consider. The C5, meanwhile, is a hiking trail with named points of interest and scenic views, while the castle park and Museum Barn offer their own historical insights. This makes it easier to decide which themes you would like to shape your stay in Castell.
