A trip to Naila offers a wide range of discoveries: water and hydropower, geological traces, a neo-Gothic town church and museum collections. If you want to combine nature and culture, you can weigh up the hiking themes and route lengths against your cultural interests when planning your stay.

Discover water and geology on nature trails

The Water Adventure Trail is an easy, 5.3-kilometre educational circular trail. It starts at the Höllensprudel and Hochfrankenquelle mineral springs. Along the way, it explores the past and present use of hydropower. The trail also explains how the Selbitz created the Höllental and returns to the spring house via the Röhrensteig. The route thus links water as a harnessed source of power with its importance to the landscape.

The easy, 6.6-kilometre Naila Geology Trail offers a different focus. This educational trail is dedicated to geology and the Slate Region Geopark, and explores former mineral deposits and their extraction in Naila. If you would like to extend the route, you can plan an easy detour of about 800 metres to the Kalkofen Flaserkalk quarry. The Pikrit rocks are also on the Geology Trail, where there is a rest area.

Compare route lengths and views

The three easy trails differ in both length and focus: the Water Adventure Trail is 5.3 kilometres long, and the Naila Geology Trail is 6.6 kilometres. The Garles Trail OS 43 is a 10.6-kilometre circular hike from Naila to the Garlesfelsen rock and back via Marlesreuth. It starts at Naila railway station. There is a seating area and a viewpoint at the Garlesfelsen.

If you are particularly interested in water and its use, the Water Adventure Trail offers a clear focus on this topic. The Geology Trail foregrounds geological subjects and the optional detour to the quarry. The longer Garles Trail offers a different kind of outing. The distances allow for a direct comparison of routes; they do not specify walking times.

The FrankenwaldSteigla “Der Wilde Mann” is another option for views across Naila and the former district to the Döbraberg: the viewpoint is in the area of the former Schneckengrün estate. The route starts at Naila railway station and passes through the Froschgrün district. This adds another viewpoint to the selection; its distinctive theme is clear even without a stated route length or difficulty rating.

Naila Town Church and Museum

Today’s Naila Town Church was built in the neo-Gothic style between 1869 and 1871, following the last major city fire. Its organ was built in 1997 by the Berlin organ-building company Karl Schuke and is counted among the most outstanding instruments in all of Upper Franconia. The church’s history and its organ offer a distinct cultural focus alongside the educational trails and viewpoints.

The well-known hot-air balloon associated with the spectacular 1979 balloon escape is on display at the Naila Museum in the new “Forum Naila.” Other exhibits explore the shoemaking trade, and the collection also includes a dolls’ house. The museum thus showcases both a notable event in recent history and traditional crafts and everyday culture.

Cultural attractions nearby

Marlesreuth also broadens the cultural selection in the area around Naila. The Handweaving Museum vividly conveys the life and work of handweavers and offers an insight into the bygone era of the “Handweaving Frankenwald.” In Marlesreuth village church, a carved wooden coffered ceiling, a pulpit altar and a baptismal angel shape the interior. The nearby Höllental is also known for its wild and romantic scenery.

For planning purposes, the interests can be easily sorted: educational trails offer different focuses on water and geology, while the town church and museum explore architectural, craft and event history. Marlesreuth and the Höllental add to the attractions in the surrounding area. First choose which of these themes you want your trip to focus on, then use route length and trail character to help plan your outings.
