Bad Steben places a strong emphasis on health: the State Spa’s thermal baths offer a variety of aquatic worlds across more than 8,500 m², an expansive sauna area and a Wellness Dome with medical wellness bathing experiences. There are also paths and facilities that connect exercise and Kneipp treatments with the spa park. For your stay, you can choose different focuses rather than trying to squeeze all the offerings into a packed itinerary.

Thermal Baths and Kneipp Facility

The thermal baths bring together aquatic worlds, a sauna area and a Wellness Dome under one roof. If you want to plan your visit around these, check the current details of the offerings in advance: individual facilities and experiences may change. A different kind of Kneipp treatment is available at the freely accessible, covered Kneipp facility in Ludwig-Müller Park on Friedrichstraße. It comprises a walking pool and two arm basins. Check the facility’s current conditions on site. This lets you consider the extensive thermal baths and the clearly defined Kneipp station as different elements of your stay.

Health Trail or Educational Trail?

The health trail is a circular route of around 10 kilometres with 11 stations. It starts in Bad Steben’s spa park and runs via Schöne Aussicht, Steinbach and Seifengrund before returning to Bad Steben. Exercises at the stations include stair rocking, tree support and pinecone balancing; there is also a natural Kneipp pool. If this trail is part of your plans, check for local updates before your visit.

The geological and mining educational trail from Bad Steben to Blechschmidtenhammer is laid out differently. Its 17 information boards present the region’s more than 1,000-year history of mining. The difference matters when choosing: the health trail is described as a circular route and returns to Bad Steben; the educational trail leads from there to Blechschmidtenhammer and focuses on mining. The two trails thus offer different ways to explore exercise and regional history, without requiring you to treat them as the same kind of tour.

Churches, Spa Park and the Founding of a Museum

Architectural history can also be traced through different periods. St. Walburga’s fortified church was built in its present form around 1500 and is one of the oldest buildings in the Franconian Forest. Luther Church was built in 1910 using open reinforced-concrete construction and is one of the few Art Nouveau churches in Germany. The difference in period and construction methods gives you two distinct points of reference if architecture is to be part of your stay.

Another notable feature is the 40-hectare spa park, whose historic colonnaded promenade hall is a listed monument. Since 1910, the semi-open hall with its large arched openings has adorned the park. Here, you can focus on a specific architectural form and its place in the history of the spa park. The Graphic Arts Museum adds another thread to this cultural history: Stefanie Barbara and Dr. h. c. Wolfgang Schreiner opened it in June 1994 at Bad Steben’s spa house. This story of its opening is a distinct point alongside the churches and the promenade hall.

A Different Focus: The Casino

The Bad Steben Casino offers a very different activity from the spa park, hiking trails and architectural history. Its stated gaming options include American roulette at three tables, blackjack at one table and more than 70 slot machines, including multi-roulette. As the offerings may change, check the current operating details directly with the casino if you plan a visit.
