Sand a.Main combines a large quarry lake with hiking and cycling trails, basket weaving and wine. When looking for accommodation, you can first consider which of these aspects you want to shape your stay: activities on the water, getting active on the trails, or insights into crafts and winegrowing. The options offer different points of reference without prescribing a set daily itinerary.

Quarry lake, waterside nature trail and trails

The 40-hectare quarry lake in Sand am Main has play and sunbathing lawns, as well as opportunities for swimming, stand-up paddleboarding, boating and fishing. Camping is also available at the lake; check in advance whether camping is currently possible. This lets you plan your time by the water around the activities you want to enjoy.

Hiking trail S 1, “Around the Old Main,” is about 4 km long and follows almost exactly the same route as the waterside nature trail created by the Sport Anglers’ Association on the Upper Main. The trail introduces the animal and plant life in and around the water. The two names therefore highlight different aspects of almost the same route: the approximate distance is useful for planning the S 1, while nature is the focus of the waterside trail. So don’t automatically count them as two separate hiking routes. Other hiking options in Sand a.Main include the Mainaue Life Nature Experience Trail and the Franconian St. Mary’s Way; the Main-Steigerwald cycle route leads from Sand out of the Main Valley and into the Steigerwald.

For a view of Sand and the Main Valley, visit the Sand a. Main panoramic swing on the Teilberg. This adds another clearly identified viewpoint to the activities on the water and hiking options.

Sandstone, basket weaving and wine

The town’s history also includes the extraction of reed sandstone: from the mid-18th century onwards, more of it was quarried on the Hermannsberg near Sand. This period marks the start of more intensive quarrying and places the topic in its historical context.

At several basketware businesses in Sand am Main, visitors can learn about the techniques and history of basket weaving. Those interested in local crafts will find a different focus here from the nature and water activities.

Winegrowing also offers specific insights into the work and presentation of wine. Mathias Rippstein makes wine from grapes grown in the Himmelsbühl vineyards at the press house and in ageing rooms accessible at ground level. Since autumn 2015, the wines of the A & E Rippstein winery have been presented in a wine shop on the ground floor of the Rippstein residence. From there, you can see the press house and a vineyard belonging to the winery. If you plan to visit the wine shop, confirm in advance whether it is currently open to the public.

The Haßberge as a regional setting

The wider Haßberge travel destination offers additional hiking and cultural themes to complement your choice of places to visit. The “Castles & Palaces Quality Hiking Trail” lets you explore the nature of the German Castle Corner on foot. The experience tours in Haßberge Nature Park are half-day or full-day excursions and follow circular routes back to their starting points. These regional tours therefore specify both an approximate time frame and a return to the starting point, whereas the S 1 in Sand gives a concrete planning figure: a distance of about 4 km.

The region also has a rich cultural heritage: Bettenburg is considered a landmark of the Haßberge, and the Schwedenschanze is a ring fort dating from the Hallstatt period. The Schwedenschanze observation tower crowns a 487 m-high hilltop on the Haßberg ridge. From there, the view stretches over mixed forest towards the Grabfeld, as well as to the distant heights of the Rhön in the northwest and Thuringia in the north.
