There are several ways to explore Streitberg: the Bing Cave leads into an underground world of stalactite formations, while the ruins of Streitburg Castle combine history with views over the Wiesent Valley. Other attractions include the Muschelquelle spring, a Kneipp facility and regional hiking trails. Together with Muggendorf, Streitberg is one of the two oldest climatic health resorts in Franconian Switzerland.

The Bing Cave: almost 300 metres underground

The Bing Cave in Streitberg is a show cave. Along an almost 300-metre route, you’ll encounter atmospheric, illuminated stalactite formations. After a brief introduction from trained staff, you can explore the cave on your own. The temperature is 9°C all year round. Make sure to bring an extra layer for the cool conditions.

Castle history and views

The ruins of Streitburg Castle lie above the town of Streitberg and include the Lochgefängnis (dungeon). The castle was once one of the most significant medieval fortifications in all of Franconian Switzerland. From the viewpoint at the ruins, you can look across the Wiesent Valley to the ruins of Neideck Castle on the opposite side. The Prinz-Rupprecht-Pavillon is a historic highlight and a popular viewpoint in the Wiesent Valley above Streitberg. So, in addition to the view from Streitburg Castle towards Neideck, there’s also a viewpoint above the town to choose from.

Water and landscape highlights

Highlights of the Wiesenttal Trail Tour include the sinter terraces and the waterfall on the Wendenbach stream. Streitburg Castle, with its dungeons, is another highlight. The route thus takes in both landscape features and water, as well as the history of the castle ruins. The Kneipp facility in Streitberg has a classic water-treading pool designed according to the principles of Sebastian Kneipp. The Muschelquelle spring is easily reached by a short path from the town centre; its little stream is a fun place for children to play. Check local access conditions before your visit.

Getting there and exploring the wider destination

The VGN Wiesenttal-Express 389 leisure bus takes hikers from Ebermannstadt to the starting point of the tour in Streitberg. If you plan to use this service, check the timetable before travelling.

The wider Wiesenttal destination has an exceptionally well-maintained network of hiking trails. The Wiesenttal Tour is a moderately difficult, 35.0 km route along the Wiesent Valley between Muggendorf and Forchheim. The information centre of the Franconian Switzerland Nature Park is located in the station at Muggendorf stop. It presents nature parks and the region’s characteristic flora and fauna through text and images.

The ruins of Neideck Castle are also part of the wider Wiesenttal destination. They stand high above the Wiesent Valley in Franconian Switzerland, bear witness to medieval history and offer views of the surrounding landscape. The ruins cannot be reached by car; paths lead uphill from the outdoor swimming pool in Streitberg and from the district of Haag. Check parking conditions separately.
