Röttenbach combines several ways to enjoy the outdoors with historical points of interest in the village. The 146-kilometre Seenländer Trail has passed through the municipality since 2011, linking Lake Altmühlsee, Lake Brombachsee and Lake Rothsee. The Röttenbach Keuper Trail offers a different focus: this geological and geographical educational trail is about ten kilometres long and passes through the municipality’s natural features, with a total of eleven stops. This gives travellers a choice between a long hiking route, a themed educational trail and circular routes about the village’s history, which vary in length.

Hiking Trails and Viewpoints

The Keuper Trail focuses on Röttenbach’s geological and geographical features. The educational trail includes seven information boards, or eight on the longer loop. Röttenbach’s three information-board trails take a different thematic approach: they present the village’s history, vary in length and each start at the town hall. This makes it possible to compare the Keuper Trail’s natural features with the historical walks. Choosing a route therefore depends both on the subject you are interested in and the distance: the Keuper Trail is around ten kilometres long, while the three circular routes differ from one another in length.

The mountain spur of Kappelstein offers a viewpoint. Through a gap in the forest, the view extends northwards and over Röttenbach. The viewpoint and the trails offer different perspectives: from Kappelstein, the view takes in the village and its landscape; the Keuper Trail focuses on natural features, while the information boards explore the village’s history.

Historic Village Sights

In the old village centre, the restored rectory dating from 1718 is considered a local landmark. The old forester’s house was built between 1723 and 1740 as a manor house serving as the bailiff’s residence and administrative centre for the village. The histories of both buildings share a focus on the first decades of the 18th century, but point to different functions: the rectory is a landmark of the old village centre, while the forester’s house is associated with its former administrative role. Those interested in local history can consider the dates and the buildings’ different functions together, rather than viewing both simply as similar historic buildings.

More Nature Trails in the Wider Erlangen-Höchstadt Destination

The network of cycling and hiking trails in the wider Erlangen-Höchstadt destination offers another perspective: visitors looking for outdoor recreation can use it to explore landscapes from the Aisch valley to the Erlanger Oberland. Near Höchstadt, the trails have different characteristics. The waymarked, flat Eisvogelweg is a circular route about 2.6 kilometres long through the Franconian pond country. The Orchideenweg is around 2.2 kilometres long and is designed as a route for both vehicles and pedestrians through a cultural landscape of reed-fringed ponds, wet meadows, numerous waterbirds and orchids such as the marsh helleborine. The mostly flat Seerosenweg runs for about 2.4 kilometres through the historic Gretelmark forest; its features include woodland ponds, water lilies and bulrushes, as well as kingfishers. The three trails are similar in length but differ in their landscapes and natural features. The wider destination therefore offers a choice ranging from Röttenbach’s Keuper Trail and village-history walks to the pond and woodland landscapes near Höchstadt.
