When looking for accommodation in Dollnstein, you can plan your stay around two main attractions: the historic town center and activities on foot, by bike, or on the water. Its own Regional Express stop on the Nuremberg–Munich line and various route connections provide practical guidance, while the town’s history and the Altmühlzentrum Burg Dollnstein invite cultural exploration. When choosing your accommodation, it helps to first consider whether culture, cycling, hiking, or boat tours will shape your travel plans.

Getting to Dollnstein and routes from the town

Dollnstein has its own Regional Express stop on the Nuremberg–Munich line. The station can serve as a starting point for leisure activities such as cycling, hiking, and boating. The Altmühltal Cycle Route also passes directly through the town; Dollnstein is also a starting point for tours along the river.

There are different options for planning a cycling trip: the Dollnstein–Wellheim section of the Urdonautal Cycle Route is flat and runs largely along the former Urdonautalbahn railway line. The Urdonautalsteig, meanwhile, begins in Dollnstein and follows the former course of the Urdonau for 85 kilometers, passing through the “Beixenhard” nature forest reserve and Wellheim, before reaching Rennertshofen. Its Dollnstein–Wellheim section begins at the Antonius Chapel; signposting for a connecting route is available from the station. Check access details before setting out.

Boat tours and water access

Boat tours can start directly from Dollnstein. The boat access and exit point just outside the town is equipped with stone steps and a wooden slide. There is also a changing room and a portable toilet on site. As starting points and operator arrangements can change, check the details for your specific tour before making plans.

Town center, church, and Altmühlzentrum

A medieval defensive wall encloses Dollnstein’s historic town center, where half-timbered houses and Jura houses have been preserved. The town’s architectural history also includes the Catholic parish church of St. Peter and Paul: its nave is Romanesque at its core, while the choir was built around 1300 in the Gothic style. The frescoes in the choir date from around 1320 to 1330 and were rediscovered and restored in 1877/78.

The exhibition at the Altmühlzentrum Burg Dollnstein explores the history of Dollnstein Castle, the market town, and the whole region, as well as the distinctive features of the Altmühltal’s natural and cultural landscape. Highlights include the famous Dollnstein coin hoard. Guided tours are available on request; on certain dates, visitors can mint coins using an old screw press. The center is particularly well suited to exploring the theme of “medieval life and living” in its museum education area.

Nature and special places nearby

The 60-hectare Mühlbergleite nature reserve lies near Dollnstein. Its landscape includes sheep pastures, distinctive dolomite rocks, hedges and shrub-covered patches, as well as surrounding deciduous and mixed forests. The Mühlberggrotte near Dollnstein also offers a glimpse into the region’s long history: the hemispherical grotto was excavated in 1947, and finds range from the present day to the Paleolithic period. Around 150 typical stone tools of the Paleolithic backed blade culture date from around 12,000 BC.

The 45-meter-high Burgstein rock between Dollnstein and Breitenfurt offers a different experience. The rock massif is used by sport climbers and has 30 routes graded from IV to IX. It is also one of Bavaria’s most beautiful geotopes. Information about the rock, routes, and natural landscape can help you consider local history and scenery as different focuses for your stay.
