Marxheim lies directly at the confluence of the Lech and Danube. Cycling routes pass through the town, hiking trails run along both rivers, and the Jura Heights offer panoramic views across the Danube and Lech valleys. There are also traces of history in Marxheim and other places in the municipality. The river landscape, outdoor activities and architectural history therefore offer distinct reasons to stay. Whether you focus on the trails, the views or individual cultural monuments depends on your travel interests.

Cycling and hiking trails between the Danube and Lech

The Danube Cycle Path runs directly through Marxheim. The “Lech-Donau” cycle path in the Donau-Ries holiday region also passes through the town. The Romantic Road runs through Marxheim as well. When planning your route, distinguish between the two cycle paths by their respective names; check the current route before setting out, as routes can change. Near Marxheim, hiking trails run along the Danube and Lech. The cycling and hiking trails therefore relate to the same river landscape, but offer different ways to explore it.

The Jura Heights offer another perspective: from there, panoramic views stretch across the Danube and Lech valleys. While hiking trails near Marxheim run alongside the rivers, the Jura Heights offer views across both valleys. This provides a different impression of the landscape from following the rivers and adds a view from above to the choice between cycling and hiking trails.

Historical traces in Marxheim and the municipality

A castle site of the ancestral castle remains on a promontory above the Danube in Marxheim. Its location connects it with the river landscape, while the castle site also offers its own point of interest in the town’s history. Another historical detail can be found at the parish church of St. Peter and Paul: the lower floors of the former choir tower date from the 14th century. The castle site and the dated parts of the former choir tower are distinct historical traces that reveal the town’s past.

Cultural sites in other settlements are also part of the municipality of Marxheim. In Schweinspoint, the industrial monument of the lime kiln was saved from decay and made accessible to visitors. In Graisbach, a historic castle ruin stands on Schlossberg at the northern edge of the village. It is temporarily closed for renovation work; check its current status before visiting. These places add separate destinations within the municipality to Marxheim’s local history, without being equivalent to the architectural heritage in the town itself.

Geology and history in the wider Donau-Ries travel region

The Geopark Ries adds a geological dimension to the wider Donau-Ries travel region. Donau-Ries District describes the geopark, with its Ries Crater formed by a meteorite impact, as a tourist attraction. The KĂĽhstein Geopark Trail explains the impact processes from 14.5 million years ago on eight information panels. Buchberg offers panoramic views of the Ries and its inner and outer crater rims. The trail and the viewpoint thus explore two aspects of the same regional theme: the formation of the crater and its shape in the landscape.

Nördlingen is also part of the wider Donau-Ries travel region. Its medieval town wall is fully preserved and can be walked in its entirety. The town museum displays a collection more than 150 years old across four floors and covers, among other topics, the lives and beliefs of people in Nördlingen, the Reformation, the Thirty Years’ War and the 1634 Battle of Nördlingen. A model made of around 6,000 tin figures depicts the battle. Visitors interested in history will find a different perspective here than in Marxheim: the museum connects several periods and subjects, while the architectural heritage in Marxheim preserves individual traces of local history.
