Visitors considering Niederalteich as a destination will find three distinct highlights: cycling along a former railway line, hiking a long-distance trail and taking church tours at the Benedictine Abbey. Both routes start here but lead through different landscapes; the abbey offers a separate cultural experience that takes a manageable amount of time. You can therefore plan your stay around your interests and preferred way of getting around.

Cycling routes from Niederalteich

The 55-kilometre Donau-Ilz Cycle Route starts at the Danube in Niederalteich. It follows a former railway line through the Sonnenwald and Dreiburgenland regions to the Ilz Valley near Hutthurm/Kalteneck. In Niederalteich, the Donau-Ilz Cycle Route connects to the Danube Cycle Route and the Isar Cycle Route. The route leads from the banks of the Danube through the landscapes mentioned above towards the Ilz Valley.

Hiking the Gunthersteig

The 82-kilometre Gunthersteig long-distance hiking trail runs from Niederalteich via Lalling, Rinchnach, Lindberg, Spiegelhütte and Scheuereck/Prasily to Dobrá Voda (Gutwasser) in the Czech Republic. It follows in the footsteps of Saint Gunther through the Bavarian and Bohemian Forests. Its connection to Saint Gunther gives the trail a clearly defined theme; its stops illustrate the long route from Niederalteich to the Czech Republic. Compared with the cycle route, the two options differ in how you travel and in their length: 55 kilometres by bike versus 82 kilometres on a long-distance hiking trail.

Abbey tours with a set duration

If you would rather plan a cultural visit than a longer route, consider a tour of Niederaltaich Benedictine Abbey. Tours include the Baroque Basilica of St. Mauritius, with its sacristy and upper church, as well as the Byzantine Church of St. Nicholas. The Baroque basilica can only be visited on a guided tour. A tour of either church lasts 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the arrangement. Confirm the arrangements with the abbey before you travel so that you can fit your visit into your plans.

Plan ahead for the Danube ferry

The Altaha Danube ferry operates across the Danube from one bank to the other and back. During the 2026 season, the ferry was out of service due to a technical fault. If crossing by ferry is important to your plans, check its current operating status before your trip.

In the wider Deggendorf destination

Natternberg Castle Ruins can be reached by footpaths from three directions; from there, the view stretches far across the Gäuboden and into the Bavarian Forest. Winzer Castle Ruins offer a magnificent view of the Danube Valley. The views have different focal points: Natternberg looks out over the Gäuboden and the Bavarian Forest, while Winzer overlooks the Danube Valley. The Deggendorf region stretches from the heights of the Bavarian Forest across the Danube landscape, including the Isar's confluence, to the rich colours of the Gäuboden. Its elevation ranges from 200 to 1,150 metres above sea level. This variety of landscapes expands the choice in the wider Deggendorf destination to include forested heights, a river landscape and the Gäuboden.

Route lengths and the agreed duration of a church tour represent different planning timeframes.
